There’s no point in trying to sugarcoat this for Texas A&M: The Aggies have become the hunted. A year after the real training began for their official move to the SEC from the Big 12, the Aggies enter spring practice with loftier expectations and more eyes fixated on them. They can no longer be considered the supposed ragtag group that was expected to struggle for relevancy in their new home. After shocking their new conference mates with 11 wins, including one over eventual national champion Alabama in Tuscaloosa, A&M begins enters spring figuratively glancing over its shoulder.

After calling plays for Texas A&M in the Aggies’ 41-13 win against Oklahoma in the AT&T Cotton Bowl, running backs coach Clarence McKinney was promoted to co-offensive coordinator for next season, a source told ESPN.com. The source also said that McKinney will be the Aggies’ primary play-caller. Former West Virginia quarterbacks coach Jake Spavital will serve as the other co-offensive coordinator and will coach quarterbacks, the source said.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Oklahoma’s defense had heard the legends about Johnny Football. They’d seen the highlight reels and trophy acceptance speeches. Until Friday, though, it had never stepped on the same field with the first freshman to ever win a Heisman Trophy. After Texas A&M’s 20-year-old superstar rolled over the Sooners for 516 total yards (229 passing, 287 throwing) and four touchdowns in a 41-13 Cotton Bowl victory, Oklahoma couldn’t help but be glad his college years will be spent on fields across the SEC and not the Big 12 — where the Aggies would have been if not for some conference upheaval over the past two years.

Three keys for Oklahoma in tonight’s AT&T Cotton Bowl against Texas A&M: 1. Protect Landry Jones, and the ball: When the Sooners have kept Jones upright, he’s been lethal throwing the ball to a quartet of playmaking receivers. But the few times that opposing defenses have gotten pressure, Jones has been subject to making major mistakes, notably in a loss to Kansas State earlier this season. This will be OU’s toughest protection test yet, as the Aggies feature one of the top sack artists in the country in Damontre Moore.

Here’s a look at three keys for No. 9 Texas A&M’s matchup with No. 11 Oklahoma in the AT&T Cotton Bowl: 1. Don’t change the script: Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury might be gone, but all those athletes who made the Aggies’ offense so potent in 2012 will still be lining up inside Jerry’s World. And that includes Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel, who made just about every defense he faced look silly. Kingsbury and Manziel had a special in-game relationship, but Kingsbury is now at Texas Tech, so Manziel won’t have the luxury of Kingsbury’s guidance on the sideline.

Now we will find out just about everything when it comes to Johnny Manziel’s football maturity. He might have won the Heisman Trophy and might have been the nation’s most exciting player to watch in 2012, but Texas A&M’s redshirt freshman quarterback is in for a real challenge in Year 2. That challenge will be leading the Aggies’ offense without the guidance of offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who was named the head coach at Texas Tech on Wednesday.

With Texas Tech closing in on its replacement for Tommy Tuberville, who abruptly left the Red Raiders for Cincinnati, it appears the Red Raiders aren’t looking too far in their search. Sources told ESPN that Texas A&M offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury is a front-runner for the job along with Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris. It should come as no surprise that Kingsbury is up for the Texas Tech job. He not only did a fantastic job as the Aggies’ offensive coordinator this year but he had a record-setting career as Texas Tech’s quarterback from 1998-2002.
