Texas’ 2010 slide began on its home field when UCLA beat the Longhorns 34-12, giving Texas its first loss of the season in its fourth game. The Longhorns are headed to Los Angeles for the rematch, and game time has officially been set. Texas and the Bruins will play at 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with a reverse mirror broadcast on ESPN for fans that aren’t in the regional broadcast area of the game. Texas opens its season against Rice before hosting BYU. UCLA should be the second test for the Longhorns, who have been beaten by the Bruins three consecutive times. One of those games was the infamous “Rout 66″ loss in Austin, a 66-3 stomping by the Bruins. The two met again in Calfornia the following year with a new coach named Mack Brown, but lost to the then-No. 6 Bruins, 49-31. Texas eventually won eight of its final nine games to finish 9-3 and Brown got the program back on top. For now, it’s still stinging from a 5-7 down year, the worst since that 4-7 year in 1997. Can this year’s trip signify change after last year? It could be the first real indicator of if last year’s struggles were a sign of a larger trend or just a hiccup. Texas could be 1-1 or 2-0 heading into it, and for any team that early in the season, 3-0 looks a lot different than 1-2, but the gap between the two could be just a few bounces of the ball. Plenty of folks will see where the Longhorns fall in their nonconference finale.
