New Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez signed 23 players on Wednesday, though he said additional players may be added in the next weeks during the signing period or beyond. Prospects from eight states across five time zones signed, with 10 offensive players, nine on defense and three listed as athletes at the onset of their careers. Todd Graham’s first few weeks on the job at Arizona State have been about fences: Building them. Mending them. Figuring out how to put a “de” in front of them. Graham, in essence, has three No. 1 priorities. In the immediate future, his first No. 1 priority has been building a fence around Phoenix to keep the region’s top talent at home, then venturing out into the rest of the state before dipping the fiery pitchfork into California, Texas and somewhat into Florida.

Three keys for California against Texas in the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl. 1. Maynard’s mechanics: It’s no coincidence that California played better when QB Zach Maynard rediscovered his accuracy. During the four-game stretch to end the season when the Bears won three and nearly upset rival Stanford, he completed 68 percent of his passes with five TDs and just one pick. The Bears won’t be able to just run at this Texas defense, but the Longhorns also own one of the nation’s best pass defenses.

Time to predict the non-BCS Pac-12 bowl games after Christmas. The season record is 67-24. Bridgepoint Education Holiday, Dec. 28 Texas 24, California 21: Cal finished strong, Texas did not, but we still worry about the Bears. You want to believe. This feels like a defensive struggle, but Texas should have enough offense to win this in the fourth quarter. Valero Alamo, Dec. 29 Baylor 44, Washington 38: The Huskies’ defense might surprise some folks early, and the offense should be able to keep up with Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III for a while.
