Despite the repeated motto in Death Valley under coach Dabo Swinney, not everyone was “all in” when offensive coordinator Chad Morris was first hired. He was one year removed from coaching high school football in Texas. He was bringing in a new offensive philosophy and new scheme. And his collegiate coaching experience consisted of one season at Tulsa. “There were a lot of questions from him coaching high school and Tulsa, Conference USA,” quarterback Tajh Boyd said.

Houston is not a modern recruiting powerhouse. Since the early 1980s, when Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon did their Phi Slama Jama thing, the Cougars have mostly existed outside the margins of elite basketball and elite recruiting. That has been especially true in recent years. Frankly, Houston is not a school you expect to announce big or impressive recruiting news — it just doesn’t ever happen. And yet, here we are. On Sunday night, Houston officially earned commitments from five-star small forward Danuel House and four-star power forward Danrad “Chicken” Knowles . House is the No. 15-ranked overall player in the class of 2012 and the No. 3 player at his position. Knowles is No. 56 in the country overall and No. 15 at the power forward spot. So what gives? Why did two of the country’s top 50 or so recruits, including one of its best, suddenly decide to play their collegiate basketball at Houston despite offers from schools like Georgetown, Kansas, Texas, Ohio State, and so forth? Both players seem thrilled by the prospect of bringing Houston basketball back to the national conversation.

CHICAGO — The proposed airing of high school football games on Texas’ Longhorn Network has caused a stir among Big 12 members, who fear Texas could gain a significant recruiting advantage by showcasing prospects on its air. The Big Ten has its own TV network, too. But league commissioner Jim Delany wants to cut that high school controversy off before it begins. He says it just doesn’t make sense when his league and others are trying to push reforms to recruiting regulations and cut down on the influence of things like 7-on-7 tournaments. “In my view, it’s not time for the Big Ten Network to engage in the coverage of high school sports,” Delany said. “Maybe it’s a recruiting advantage, maybe it’s not. But that’s not why that network was created. “So, therefore, while we go through this reform process, while we try to sort out the best ways of doing business, it’s going to be the Big Ten Conference’s position … that we refrain from telecasting high school games for at least the next couple years until we sort out these other, more important issues.” That doesn’t mean that high school games are completely off the table for the Big Ten Network
