Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore has done so much during his Broncos career, from going to a BCS game to becoming a Heisman finalist to throwing for over 3,000 yards in each of his first three seasons as a starter. But perhaps there is no better measure for what he has meant to his team than the mark he is in line to get Saturday at UNLV. Moore is set to pass former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy as the all-time NCAA career wins leader, with 46 victories. The No. 5 Broncos are 41-point favorites and are expected to dominate once again. “I think the No. 1 stat that most coaches and most people care about is the wins or losses,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. “Sometimes they’re not always how you draw them up, but at the end of the day that’s probably the most important stat.” Moore, who epitomizes the word humble, has never missed a game in his Boise State career. He said this in July about getting the record: “The victories record is a special one just because that comes with more than just me. I’m smart enough to recognize if I can do that, then George Iloka would probably be the winningest safety. Thomas Byrd would love to be the winningest center. There’s been a lot of guys involved in that run. I think that would be pretty neat.” Here is a by-the-numbers look at Moore during his winning run: First win: Aug. 30, 2008 — 49-7 over Idaho State. Moore went 14-of-19 for 274 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Associated Press game story noted, “Becoming the first freshman to start in the season opener for the Broncos, the left-handed Moore used his quick release and rifle arm to complete 14 of 19 passes and no interceptions.” Losses: 2. TCU in 2009 and Nevada in 2010. 300-yard passing games: 13. Included in there: one 500-yard day against Hawaii last season, and two 400-yard games. Only Ryan Dinwiddie (four) had more in school history. Total career touchdown passes: 123. That ranks No. 4 on the NCAA career passing touchdown list. He needs nine to pass Colt Brennan (Hawaii 2004-07) for third place. Multiple TD games: 40. Included are 28 games with three or more, eight with four or more and four with five scoring passes. Moore has thrown for multiple touchdowns in 20 straight games. Total career interceptions: 24. Multiple INT games: 3. 26: Number of games in which he completed over 70 percent of his passes. Five: Number of games in which he completed over 80 percent of his passes. Two came this season: Georgia (82.4 percent) and Colorado State (87.6 percent). 101.6: Worst career passer rating, against Nevada earlier this year in a 30-10 win. Moore went 19-of-33 for 142 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. It was the only game this season he completed less than 70 percent of his passes. 250: Best career passer rating, against San Jose State last year in a 48-0 win. Moore was 14-of-16 for 231 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Boise State talked conference this week. Yup, Mountain West Conference. Sure, national headlines may have linked the Broncos to a new home in the Big East. Those were promptly ignored. What was emphasized? Making a statement in their first Mountain West game against Colorado State on Saturday. You could say No. 5 Boise State made a statement. Or you could say Boise State just kept on rolling and did not really have to say much of anything. The Broncos absolutely controlled the Rams from the start of the game, racking up a school-record 742 yards of offense, and getting career days from running back Doug Martin , receiver Tyler Shoemaker and another eye-popping performance from Kellen Moore in a 63-13 win . That marks back-to-back games in which the Broncos executed to near perfection, something that perhaps we have become spoiled watching with Moore in charge. Moore, ever understated, simply said, “Just felt like we were executing like the way it goes in practice. Hopefully that’s the type of stuff we have. If we execute the way we should, those things should be happening.” Moore started the game with 18 straight completions and finished 26-of-30 for 338 yards and four touchdown passes. His .867 completion percentage was the fourth-highest total in school history. But it gets better than that. It was the second time this season he completed more than 80 percent of his passes. He did it in the opener against Georgia, too. If anybody turns their nose at his numbers because of the subpar competition, they simply have not watched Moore play. Coach Chris Petersen said Moore is seeing things well right now, and that might be yet another understatement. When somebody has the experience Moore has, on top of the smarts Moore has, they are bound to succeed. But Moore takes that to another level with the ease in which he directs the offense. Four of his completions went for over 25 yards. His two touchdown passes to Shoemaker covered 52 yards and 62 yards, helping Shoemaker set his career mark with 180 total yards. Moore now has 120 career touchdowns, one away from tying BYU quarterback Ty Detmer for No. 4 on the NCAA list. He also needs one more win to tie the career wins record of 45, set by Colt McCoy at Texas from 2006-09. “I knew the whole week going in, the quarterback’s a good player,” Colorado State coach Steve Fairchild said. “He started out, what did he hit 18 in a row? When I played, I couldn’t have done that on air.” Meanwhile, the run game worked better than it has all season, as Martin got to 200 yards, the first time a Boise State player hit that mark since Ian Johnson had 205 against Nevada in 2007.

Went 8-2 last week as my upset predictions for Utah and Colorado went splat in the waning moments. Season record stands at 17-5. Some of you might not like these picks. In advance, sorry. I won’t mind being wrong. All games are Saturday. Stanford 35, Arizona 24 : Two great QBs going at it, but the Cardinal also has a running game and a defense. The Wildcats chances will be a lot — A LOT — better if receiver  Juron Criner plays. Arizona State 40, Illinois 28 : In the past, we’d circle this as a game the Sun Devils might blow. But we’re leaning toward believing these Sun Devils are different. And we like QB Brock Osweiler ’s play and leadership. Nebraska 30, Washington 24 : Lincoln is a tough place to play for a new starting quarterback, but the the Huskies will give the Cornhuskers all they can handle in what will be the best-played game in the three-game series. BYU 28, Utah 27 : Both teams are coming off tough losses, but BYU is at home, and that’s the difference after the Utes won by a single point at home in 2010. Texas 27, UCLA 14 : Texas has positive momentum after a comeback victory over BYU and it’s highly motivated after getting embarrassed by the Bruins in Austin in 2010. That San Jose State effort by UCLA was hard to stomach. San Diego State 33, Washington State 30 : The Cougars are 2-0, but they’ve yet to play a quality foe. The Aztecs are a quality foe and they are playing at home. Seems like there will be just a little too much Ryan Lindley and Ronnie Hillman for the Cougs defense. Colorado 30, Colorado State 21 : The Buffaloes will get the win because they’ll finally get running back  Rodney Stewart going, even with a beaten up offensive line. Oregon 80, Missouri State 2 : Chip Kelly will be unhappy with the shotgun snap from the backup center that costs the Ducks a shutout. California 742, Presbyterian 5 : We won’t be taking this game seriously.

For those of you who may not know, I spent the last year on the college football nation blog at ESPN , where a big chunk of my time was devoted to covering TCU and the non-AQ schools. With TCU joining the Big East next year, I thought it would be a good idea to give you some of my thoughts and impressions on the program. What can be expected from TCU? Great defense. TCU has led the nation in total defense three straight years . In fact, TCU has now finished first in that category more times (five) than any other program since the NCAA began tracking statistics in 1937. Coach Gary Patterson expects to be just as good in 2011, though one point to note — its top defensive player, Tank Carder, will be gone just in time for 2012. TCU runs a 4-2-5 defense , which allows it to take better advantage of the speed on defense. It is an excellent alignment to run against spread teams, which means TCU will be prepared to face the likes of Pittsburgh and West Virginia. How about on offense? TCU is loaded in the backfield this season with Ed Wesley and Matthew Tucker , and that should help take the pressure off new starting quarterback Casey Pachall . The quarterback does run in the TCU system. Andy Dalton broke for some big gains throughout his career there. The Horned Frogs have some young talent at receiver in Josh Boyce and are looking forward to several freshmen coming in, including Brandon Carter, LaDarius Brown, David Bush, David Porter and Cameron White. TCU must replace four starters on the offensive line this year, but keep in mind — the bulk of its offensive starters will return for 2012. Where will TCU wind up in Year 1 in the Big East? I definitely think TCU will have to be considered one of the favorites. Go ahead and roll your eyes, West Virginia and Pitt fans and everybody else. I understand the perception that TCU has been in a non-AQ conference and therefore has beaten up on inferior competition like UNLV, Colorado State and New Mexico. But the Horned Frogs have proven to be up to the task in all their major tests. They won the Rose Bowl over Wisconsin. They have beaten Baylor, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Clemson. It is really difficult to go undefeated, no matter the conference. Patterson has done a nice job building his program into a Top 25 outfit by recruiting athletes and then fitting them into his schemes. Plenty of offensive players have come in and been turned into stud defensive players. Will there be an adjustment period? Sure. There are no easy outs in the Big East. But TCU has what it takes to make an impact immediately. Oh, please. Well, I am just being honest. But I do want to see two things in 2011 before I make any solid judgments. First, how TCU is going to look with Pachall at quarterback. Losing Dalton is potentially huge. Secondly, how Utah fares in the Pac-12. The Utes are going to be the guinea pigs for non-AQs moving on up the ranks. Utah and TCU are different, yes. But the big knock on the non-AQs is that they do not play the same grind of a schedule as all the AQ conferences. We shall see what affect that grind has on Utah this year. This is all good for the Big East, right? Yes. I am of the opinion that adding TCU was a slam dunk, no-brainer decision. You have a school that has gone undefeated in the regular season in 2009 and 2010 with two BCS appearances — a school that brings major credibility to the table. Whether fans agree or not, that was in question last season with an 8-4 team representing the league in a BCS game

Scott Brown, who’s coached the past four seasons at Colorado State, is Arizona State’s new defensive line coach. He replaces Grady Stretz, who left to take the same position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brown, 59, was at Duke 12 years before arriving at Colorado State. He’s also coached at Minnesota and TCU. “Scott Brown brings a wealth of knowledge to Arizona State on coaching defensive line play,” head coach Dennis Erickson said in a statement. “Everyone I spoke with talked about his work with the players and how much they learned from him. Scott will be a tremendous help to Craig Bray in our game planning during game week. I was extremely impressed with his ideas and concepts of a defense. He brings us so much more than just a position coach in that regard. He gave us a very impressive interview. Our defensive linemen, who met with Scott while he was on his interview, were very impressed with his style and his passion for the game. They were ready to play immediately.” Erickson also cited Brown’s recruiting experience in Texas. “He has recruited the state of Texas for 30 years,” Erickson said.  “He has extensive contacts there and not just in a certain area, but in the entire state of Texas.  Trying to get into the state of Texas with no connections is difficult. With Scott’s connections we will have instant credibility in that state.” The Arizona Republic reported that ”Brown likely won’t replace Stretz as recruiting coordinator. Those duties could fall to receivers coach Steve Broussard or running backs coach Bryce Erickson.”
