It was a one-sided shootout Cornhuskers erase 21-point deficit to claim first Big Ten win

The first week of conference play cleared up a few things in the Big Ten. It’s pretty clear, at least for now, that Wisconsin is the best team in the league. And the gap is pretty large, though that can change. We may need to take Michigan seriously, and Illinois just keeps on winning. Ohio State has some major problems, while Nebraska still has much to prove since the Cornhuskers have never won a Big Ten game. Iowa is a squad that soon could move up this list, while Purdue still has a ways to go before it can be considered a bowl team. With that in mind, here are latest (and yet still very early) Big Ten bowl projections: Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO: Wisconsin vs. BCS team Tostitos Fiesta Bowl: Nebraska vs. BCS team Capital One Bowl: Michigan vs. SEC team Outback Bowl: Michigan State vs. SEC team TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl: Illinois vs. SEC team Insight Bowl: Ohio State vs.

How did Big 12 become so dysfunctional?

Went 8-2 last week as my upset predictions for Utah and Colorado went splat in the waning moments. Season record stands at 17-5. Some of you might not like these picks. In advance, sorry. I won’t mind being wrong. All games are Saturday. Stanford 35, Arizona 24 : Two great QBs going at it, but the Cardinal also has a running game and a defense. The Wildcats chances will be a lot — A LOT — better if receiver Juron Criner plays. Arizona State 40, Illinois 28 : In the past, we’d circle this as a game the Sun Devils might blow. But we’re leaning toward believing these Sun Devils are different. And we like QB Brock Osweiler ’s play and leadership. Nebraska 30, Washington 24 : Lincoln is a tough place to play for a new starting quarterback, but the the Huskies will give the Cornhuskers all they can handle in what will be the best-played game in the three-game series. BYU 28, Utah 27 : Both teams are coming off tough losses, but BYU is at home, and that’s the difference after the Utes won by a single point at home in 2010. Texas 27, UCLA 14 : Texas has positive momentum after a comeback victory over BYU and it’s highly motivated after getting embarrassed by the Bruins in Austin in 2010. That San Jose State effort by UCLA was hard to stomach. San Diego State 33, Washington State 30 : The Cougars are 2-0, but they’ve yet to play a quality foe. The Aztecs are a quality foe and they are playing at home. Seems like there will be just a little too much Ryan Lindley and Ronnie Hillman for the Cougs defense. Colorado 30, Colorado State 21 : The Buffaloes will get the win because they’ll finally get running back Rodney Stewart going, even with a beaten up offensive line. Oregon 80, Missouri State 2 : Chip Kelly will be unhappy with the shotgun snap from the backup center that costs the Ducks a shutout. California 742, Presbyterian 5 : We won’t be taking this game seriously.

Pac-12 predictions: Week 3

Expansion rumors are flying again, with Texas A&M’s flirtation with the SEC setting off speculation of another conference shuffle. But the Big Ten says it’s not interested in taking that ride. The league put out a statement Friday afternoon acknowledging that its council of presidents and chancellors (the COP/C) recently met to talk about expansion and other issues. But, the statement read: “[T]he COP/C would like to reiterate that it will not be actively engaged in conference expansion at this time, or at any time in the foreseeable future, barring a significant shift in the current intercollegiate athletic landscape. “The COP/C is aware that speculation about the possibility of expansion by the Big Ten Conference continues despite a statement from COP/C Chair and Indiana University President Michael McRobbie on December 5, 2010, indicating that the COP/C believed the expansion process had reached its natural conclusion, that it was pleased with the addition of Nebraska, and that it looked forward to working with its new colleagues in the years ahead. “The conference has spent the past 14 months actively engaged in incorporating Nebraska, academically and athletically, into the fabric of the conference. “‘We’re about as comfortable as we can be with where we are,’ said Big Ten Commissioner James E. Delany. ‘We’ve said that we will continue to monitor the landscape, but we have closed down active expansion and have no plans to seek new members.’” This isn’t all that surprising. The Big Ten added Nebraska and is comfortable with 12 teams; there’s not a huge appetite for more expansion right now (nor are there overwhelmingly great candidates for such). As I wrote earlier this week, the Cornhuskers are a terrific fit, and the Big Ten should keep that line of thinking when it comes to expansion: better, not necessarily bigger. But the statement includes the caveat “barring a significant shift” in the landscape. I think the SEC going to 16 teams and the Pac-12 following suit, with the breakdown of the Big 12, would constitute a significant shift. Fact is, the Big Ten has to be ready to pounce if the superconferences come to fruition or it will risk being left with the scraps if it ever does want to expand. But for right now, the Big Ten is hoping that things don’t change that much in college football, and that it can stay at 12 for the time being. We’ll see how realistic a goal that is.
