Doug English is the latest Longhorn to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Before going on to a pro career with the Detroit Lions, English earned a spot as one of the great Texas defensive tackles from 1972-74. “What greater validation is there for your history, your past, your heritage?” English told Texas’ website last week about his nomination. “It’s something that every single college athlete strives to do, and be, and hope that their play and their example will maybe put them in consideration one day.” English, one of 79 players and coaches nominated for induction into the Hall of Fame, was an All-American in 1974 and named the team’s MVP. He helped the Longhorns win Southwest Conference titles in 1972 and 1973 before being selected in the second round of the 1975 NFL Draft. Since his 10-year NFL career ended, English has taken part in a variety of businesses and is the president of the Lone Star Foundation, which seeks to cure spinal cord paralysis. “It’s a tremendous feeling of elation, and gratitude, and humility, and that they chose me even to consider, in light of the tremendous athletes, and people, and character that run throughout this game,” he said. “It’s just the best.”
