All things considered, this was a rough start to the week for Iowa State forward Royce White. His much-improved, NCAA tourney-bid-hunting team had a big game at Texas Tuesday, and it nearly pulled off a road win. But “nearly” is the operative word. Iowa State fell 62-55 in Austin, as White went 1-of-7 from the free-throw line. Of course, White is hardly the reason why the Cyclones lost. He scored 15 points on 7-of-16 from the field, grabbed 15 rebounds, dished five assists and even added two steals and a block.

A scan of the box scores always reveals statistical oddities and under-the-radar performances. Here are some we found from Saturday’s games: Kansas 69, Texas 66 Texas guard J’Covan Brown shot 7-of-26 (27 percent) from the field after going 8-of-28 (29 percent) in his previous outing. This season, 18 different players have taken at least 26 shots in a game, but Brown is the first to do it twice. He’s also had the two worst shooting performances of those players.

Texas Tech has hired Art Kaufman as its fourth defensive coordinator in four years. Kaufman comes to Lubbock from North Carolina, and is a 28-year veteran in college coaching. “I looked at a lot of candidates for this job but when it came down to it, I turned to a guy that I knew could get the job done,” coach Tommy Tuberville said. “Art is one of the best defensive coaches in the business and that is obvious when you take a look at the product he has put out on the field over the years.

Stat of the half: Texas did not punt. And while that might not seem like a big deal, this was a team that punted 11 times against Texas A&M a week ago, and 26 times in the past three weeks. Texas was able accomplish this without having its top two running backs, Malcolm Brown (knee) and Joe Bergeron (hamstring). Texas was able to move the ball down the field through the air and had some timely runs by Jeremy Hills and Cody Johnson. Texas had 339 yards of offense in the first half and 12 first downs.
