First, the good news: Jameis Winston, the nation’s No. 1 quarterback recruit according to Recruiting Nation, has signed his letter of intent with Florida State and faxed it in. Better late than never. Winston didn’t sign on Wednesday, national signing day, because he was in Austin, Texas, at a high school all-star game. He returned home Thursday and made it official on Friday. Now the bad news: West Virginia has officially backed out of its 2012 game with Florida State scheduled for Sept.

1. No. 4 Stanford’s 38-13 victory in a cold rain at Oregon State came at a cost. Both wide receiver Chris Owusu (concussion) and tight end Levine Toilolo went out of the game with injuries, one week after Stanford lost tight end Zach Ertz . It reminds me of Florida State in 1991, which won its first 10 games, the eighth a 27-16 victory in the rain at LSU. The Seminoles suffered so many injuries that night that they didn’t have the juice to beat Miami or Florida at season’s end. This beat-up Stanford team must play No. 7 Oregon. 2. The only two teams among the top eight that don’t play another team in the top eight are No. 3 Alabama and No. 5 Boise State. The Broncos need No. 15 Georgia to keep winning, starting with No. 20 Auburn on Saturday. The Tide must have No. 8 Arkansas win at No. 1 LSU on Nov. 25, and even then would have to negotiate their way through a three-way tie for first in the SEC West with the Tigers and the Hogs to get to the SEC championship game. I just don’t see a non-champion playing for the crystal football. 3. Oklahoma wide receiver Ryan Broyles ’ season ends with him atop the FBS in receiving yards (1,157 yards) and second in yards per game (128.56). Broyles suffered a torn ACL in the Sooners’ 41-25 victory over Texas A&M. The Sooners have had an uncanny number of injuries over the past few seasons. Coach Bob Stoops says it’s nothing more than bad luck. Strength coach Jerry Schmitt is considered one of the best in the business. But you have to wonder.

Here’s how the Big 12 stacks up heading into this weekend’s games. 1. Oklahoma (5-0, 2-0 in Big 12, last week: 1): I don’t know how big the gap between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State is, but I know it exists. Oklahoma State may be able to make it up in December in Stillwater, but until then, the Sooners have ascended into the first group of national title contenders via a road win over Florida State and an evisceration of Texas. 2. Oklahoma State (5-0, 2-0, LW: 2): Saturday was definitely the first time I’ve seen a group of starters get pulled with five minutes left in the first half. That’s what happens when you hang 35 in the first quarter and settle for a paltry 21 in the second. Cowboys head to Austin on Saturday to face a Texas team still trying to prove it’s for real. 3. Kansas State (5-0, 2-0, LW: 4): The Wildcats are the new Oklahoma State. Picked eighth in the league and unimpressive at the season’s start, the Wildcats are maybe the most surprising undefeated team left in the country. Not buying yet? Ask what Miami, Baylor and Missouri think. Three quality wins that rival almost any other team in the Big 12’s résumé. 4. Texas A&M (3-2, 1-1, LW: 6): The Aggies aren’t that far from challenging Oklahoma as the best team in the Big 12, and are a lot more talented than Kansas State, but the Wildcats have proven their worth. Second half collapses have prevented Texas A&M from doing the same. Such is college football. 5. Baylor (4-1, 1-1, LW: 5): After a frustrating loss a week ago, Baylor did a nice job validating its status as a top 25 team while hosting Iowa State. Want people to take you seriously? Beat Iowa State by 23 at home. The Bears did that, and now will chase the biggest win of their season against Texas A&M at Kyle Field. 6. Texas Tech (4-1, 1-1, LW: 7): To my knowledge, Texas Tech is the first team to move up in the rankings despite a loss. The Red Raiders rise is aided by two things: 1) Texas getting obliterated and 2) hanging tough and looking like it belonged against a team that’s as good as any in the Big 12. 7. Texas (4-1, 1-1, LW: 3): Did Texas do much right against Oklahoma? The Sooners are tough, but I didn’t see a whole lot. Right now, there’s no definitive answer to “Was Oklahoma that good? Or Texas that bad?” but the truth will be revealed in coming weeks. 8. Missouri (2-3, 0-2, LW: 8): Missouri’s stretch of three losses has caused plenty of frustration, but don’t lose sight of who was beating the Tigers: top 20 teams in their respective home stadiums. Mizzou finally comes home this week, and Iowa State will come to Faurot Field. Could be a welcome sight, but there are no guarantees in the Big 12. 9. Iowa State (3-2, 0-2, LW: 9): Iowa State was forcing turnovers early, but without them, the Cyclones 49-26 loss might have been even more lopsided. Baylor’s a more talented team than Iowa State, but if the Cyclones keep games close, they’ve shown an ability to make plays late and win games. 10. Kansas (2-3, 0-2, LW: 10): There’s no doubt Turner Gill’s seat is heating up in Lawrence as the Jayhawks aren’t showing much improvement in Year 2. He still has (or at least should have) plenty of time to turn it around, but simply put, this defense is playing too awful to give Kansas a fighting chance in conference play. Has to improve for Gill to quiet those calling for his job.

1. Are you ready to get excited about No. 13 Clemson? The Tigers knocked off Auburn and Florida State, both of them ranked, in consecutive weeks and made it to 4-0. Are you ready? No, I’m not either. Those are impressive wins but they are each easily explained. Auburn is young. Florida State had to play on the road one week after a bruising battle against Oklahoma. If Clemson can maintain its focus after two emotional wins and go on the road to beat No. 11 Virginia Tech, then I’ll be impressed. 2. No college head coach is more old school than Chris Ault of Nevada. The Hall of Famer has given fifth-year walk-on quarterback Tyler Lantrip every opportunity to be the Wolf Pack starter — until now. Redshirt freshman Cody Fajardo , who split time with Lantrip, rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown and threw for two more scores in the 35-34 loss at Texas Tech

So, is this how it ends? Last June, myself and other reporters chased commissioners and administrators into elevators and stalked meeting rooms at the InterContinental Hotel in Kansas City, wondering if the next time one of them spoke into a microphone, it would be to eulogize the Big 12. They didn’t. The Big 12 survived. For awhile, anyway. But now, with Texas ( sort of ) and Oklahoma’s presidents possessing the ability to decide their university’s future conference homes, the breaking point is near. For all the drama of the Big 12’s Almost Breakup last summer, nobody but the Buffs and Huskers got this far down the hallway leading to the exit sign. Sure, it’s not over just yet. “It’s not a done deal that this thing is going to explode. Now, there’s a lot of smoke, but you’ve seen none of that fire yet coming up,” Texas coach Tommy Tuberville said Monday. COUGH. COUGH. COUGH. CHOKE. Sorry, you’ll have to give me a second. The air here in Dallas, the home of the Big 12 offices, is getting a little difficult to breathe. Ok, I’m good. Had to slip one of these on . Anyway, maybe Tuberville’s right. The ink is not dry on any of these new conference deals, even the long-assumed marriage between Texas A&M and the SEC, which SEC commissioner Mike Slive first acknowledged publicly last week. But consider me a pupil of the Gary Pinkel School of Thought as it relates to the current odds of Big 12 survival

It was a good showing for the ACC, which went 2-2 against ranked opponents at home this weekend, and two conference wins for North Carolina and Duke. Plenty of top performers to choose from, but here are your top five: Clemson’s offense: It’s impossible to choose one star from a cast that racked up 624 yards and beat the defending national champ Auburn 38-24 on Saturday. The Tigers snapped Auburn’s 17-game winning streak, and started the season 3-0 for the first time since 2007. Quarterback Tajh Boyd had a stellar day, completing 30 of 42 passes for 386 yards and four touchdowns. Sammy Watkins finished with 10 catches for 155 yards, both school records for a freshman. The Tigers had 32 first downs and was 14-of-18 on third downs. Wow. Miami running back Lamar Miller : He ran for 184 yards on 26 carries in the Canes’ 24-6 upset of Ohio State. He got 54 of those yards on Miami’s first play from scrimmage, and the Canes’ ability to run the ball was a big difference in the game. Miller rushed nine times for 115 yards in the first quarter, the first time a Cane rushed for more than 100 yards in a quarter since Damien Berry gained 108 yards in the Oct. 10, 2009 matchup with FAMU. UNC running back Giovani Bernard : He had runs of 29 and 40 yards en route to 102 on just 12 carries in UNC’s 28-17 win over Virginia. Bernard led a ground game that finished with 222 total rushing yards. It was his first career 100-yard rushing game, and it came against a Coastal Division opponent.
