First, the good news: Jameis Winston, the nation’s No. 1 quarterback recruit according to Recruiting Nation, has signed his letter of intent with Florida State and faxed it in. Better late than never. Winston didn’t sign on Wednesday, national signing day, because he was in Austin, Texas, at a high school all-star game. He returned home Thursday and made it official on Friday. Now the bad news: West Virginia has officially backed out of its 2012 game with Florida State scheduled for Sept.

Arizona’s Rich Rodriguez signs 23

New Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez signed 23 players on Wednesday, though he said additional players may be added in the next weeks during the signing period or beyond. Prospects from eight states across five time zones signed, with 10 offensive players, nine on defense and three listed as athletes at the onset of their careers. The group includes six players from high schools in Arizona, five from California, three from Florida, three from Texas, three from Pennsylvania and one each from Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Hawaii.

Texas recruiting drops another spot

Texas has fallen one more spot in our national recruiting rankings. The Longhorns were No. 1 for almost the entirety of the 2012 class rankings, but dropped one spot this month, ceding the No. 1 ranking to national champion Alabama. Now, the Longhorns are No. 3 after being jumped by Florida State. Texas has 24 commits, and nine rank inside the ESPNU 150, the ranking of the national top 150 recruits. Of the 24 commits, 17 have at least four stars.

Schlabach: Tide roll with in-state QBs

As much as any FBS programs in the country, Alabama and Auburn have traditionally relied on homegrown prospects to lead their football teams. Over the past 25 seasons, 10 of the 15 players who have started more than one game at quarterback for the Crimson Tide were from Alabama high schools. Auburn has had five Alabama natives start at quarterback during the past 15 seasons. For a state with a much smaller population (4.8 million) than recruiting hotbeds like California, Texas, Florida and Ohio, Alabama has produced its share of great quarterbacks.

Randy Bullock wins the Groza Award

Texas A&M’s Randy Bullock won the Groza Award as the nation’s top kicker on Thursday night during “The Home Depot College Football Awards” show. Bullock led the nation with 25 field goals made on 29 attempts, and is the first Texas A&M player to ever win the Groza Award. He’s the second consecutive Big 12 player to win the Groza Award after Oklahoma State’s Dan Bailey won the award last year. Bullock beat out Florida’s Caleb Sturgis and Florida State’s Dustin Hopkins.

NIT Season Tip-Off preview

NEW YORK — The NIT Season Tip-Off had a rather pedestrian look to it when the four host schools were announced last year. Syracuse was the class of the event, while the other three hosts were hardly locks to even reach New York. Seeing Virginia Tech upset by George Mason, Stanford by Colorado State and Oklahoma State by Texas-San Antonio wouldn’t have been far-fetched possibilities. Tech never faced Mason as Florida International took down the Patriots before falling to the injury-riddled Hokies.

1. Former Penn State men’s basketball coach, Nittany Lions’ alumnus and current Navy coach Ed DeChellis echoed many when he called the charges of sexual abuse by former football defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky “disgusting.’’ DeChellis said Wednesday night after president Graham Spanier and legendary football coach Joe Paterno were fired by the board of trustees, “I don’t think the board had a choice. They needed to start the healing process. I feel for Joe.’’ DeChellis chose to leave Penn State after last season for the Naval Academy. DeChellis said that Navy had a chance of playing in the Carrier Classic in an undercard game Friday but the previous coach turned down the offer. DeChellis said he would love to get into the game in the future (and playing Air Force would make sense). But organizers did want to make sure one game worked, let alone doing a doubleheader. 2. Texas A&M coach Billy Kennedy said in a text message late Wednesday night that he’s getting better in his ongoing fight with Parkinson’s disease. Kennedy wasn’t on the court for the Aggies’ win over Liberty on Wednesday night, but he was around, and did visit with the players in the locker room. Kennedy said in a text message that he did watch the game, but he’s not sure yet if he’ll be strong enough to coach the Aggies next week in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer in New York’s Madison Square Garden. Kennedy has been on a medical leave since practice started last month. Steve Lavin, who was coming off prostate cancer surgery, returned to St. John’s Wednesday night. The Red Storm and Aggies are in the 2K tournament next week with Arizona and Mississippi State. 3. Central Florida coach Donnie Jones had the Knights ranked a year ago after upsetting Florida in his first season. But by the time the Knights got to Conference USA, the slide started. And it hasn’t stopped. The Knights are on the verge of possibly joining the Big East, but they better get their house in order first. Jones was suspended for three C-USA games and athletic director Keith Tribble resigned amid recruiting violations announced in football and men’s basketball. This comes on the heels of UCF suspending five players for an exhibition game. Jones left Marshall for UCF because of the hidden gem label given to the Orlando school. But UCF can’t make significant strides if it is embroiled with the NCAA or dealing with any other off-court issues. There has consistently been a failed attempt at consistency.
