Former Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert has told officials at SMU that he intends to enroll there, a source told ESPN’s Joe Schad on Tuesday. Gilbert visited campus earlier this season, and the Dallas university is about three hours north of Gilbert’s hometown of Austin. Gilbert lost his starting job after two games with Texas this season and then had season-ending shoulder surgery. Gilbert was given an unconditional release from his scholarship to find another school. His struggles last year were pretty public, but SMU seems like a nice place to start over. It just never worked out at Texas for Gilbert. It’s hard not to feel bad for the guy who left the field to boos for the last time he played at Texas against BYU, but look for him to make the most of any new opportunities. He’s a smart guy with a lot of physical ability. He just has to find a way to turn it into on-field production. SMU coach June Jones would be near the top of the list of guys who could bring it out.

First it was Auburn, and now it’s LSU under the microscope. Former Texas A&M assistant Van Malone told ESPN.com that Willie Lyles, who runs a scouting service, told Malone that Texas A&M would have to beat $80,000 if the Aggies wanted to sign Patrick Peterson out of high school. Malone is the recruiting coordinator and secondary coach at University of Tulsa. He said he told Lyles that A&M doesn’t pay for football players. Malone added he told Peterson in a subsequent phone conversation that Lyles was trying to sell his services. Peterson, through LSU, released a statement denying he had any relationship with Lyles and that he was never offered anything to go to LSU. “I have never had any type of relationship with Willie Lyles and he had no influence on my decision to attend LSU, or any other school for that matter,” Peterson said. “He had no involvement with my recruiting process and I resent the fact that my name has come up in these allegations. I chose LSU because it’s a great school with a great football program. I never received nor was I offered anything to go to LSU, and anyone saying otherwise is being dishonest.”

Former Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller was curiously listed as one of 10 plaintiffs on the class-action lawsuit filed against the NFL by NFL players. Miller was the only draftee. There’s a bit of risk involved in that, but NFC West blogger Bill Williamson examined whether or not doing so would hurt Miller’s draft stock. His verdict: Miller is too good of a prospect for it to hurt him. But the question of why is still there. And speaking with the Pro Player Insiders web site, Miller gave a look inside the decision. At the Super Bowl, Miller’s agent was contacted about being part of the suit, and after three weeks of consideration that involved consulting with several people including the New York Jets ‘ LaDainian Tomlinson , Miller decided to put his name to the players’ cause. “I just wanted to do my part to make sure football continues to get played,” Miller told the site last week . “Football is a business, and I really wanted to be informed about the business aspect of it. I was asked to be a part of this, and I wanted a chance to help out this elite group of guys.” Miller isn’t an NFL player just yet, but his presence puts a face to the players’ cause of preventing the rookie wage scale from changing. Miller, who joins players like Tom Brady , Peyton Manning , Mike Vrabel and Drew Brees on the suit, says the rookie wage scale wasn’t a big issue for him, but he still decided to sign up. “I’m in this for the guys who have come before me,” he told the site. “I’m a team guy, and I’m ready to help the team.” Miller said he hasn’t been asked and hasn’t decided whether or not he’ll attend the draft. NFL veterans suggested this month that rookies boycott the draft. As for his draft stock? Miller says this priority came first, though he’s a likely top-5 pick. “I hope it wouldn’t hurt my draft stock,” he said. “But you can’t really get possessive over something you never had. So if I fall, then that’s the way it will be. I’ll still be signed with someone and playing football in the NFL.”
