Kevin Sumlin isn’t a stranger to winning. The two-time national coach of the year finalist recorded a 35-17 record during his four years at Houston, before taking over as Texas A&M’s new coach in December. But as Sumlin makes his return to College Station, Texas, he’ll do so as a SEC coach. While he hasn’t coached in this league before, he understands that size, strength and speed are on a new level down here. That’s why he pushed spring practice back two weeks after spring break in order to give strength and conditioning coach Larry Jackson eight full weeks to punish his new players and get them into the proper shape for a full SEC season.

Incredibly enough, Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris was coaching high school football just a few years ago in the state of Texas. And who did he meet back then? None other than West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen, who was an assistant at Texas Tech and Houston at the time. “I had met Dana at a couple clinics down in College Station at the Lone StarClinic,” Morris said. “I met him there and listened to him speak. Obviously his time at the University of Houston they’d recruit in our areas.

Car Care Bowl: Three keys for Texas A&M

Texas A&M and Northwestern will kick off the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas on Saturday at noon ET at Reliant Stadium in Houston, but here’s a look at what the Aggies have to do to grab the win. 1. Be extra careful in those third quarters. It seemed like a fluke at first. Clearly, it was not. Every time, it seems like it’s been something different. The common denominator in most of the second-half meltdowns, though, has been turnovers. Limit those in the second half, and Texas A&M should be fine.

Texas A&M has reportedly found the man to lead it into the SEC. Houston coach Kevin Sumlin and the Aggies were finalizing a contract on Saturday morning, a source told ESPN’s Joe Schad. Sumlin lead Houston to a 12-0 record this season before a loss in the Conference USA Championship to Southern Miss, whose coach, Larry Fedora, was also a candidate at Texas A&M. Fedora took the job at North Carolina. Sumlin was an assistant coach at A&M from 2001-02.

Texas A&M headed to Houston for bowl

Texas A&M will face Northwestern at Reliant Stadium in Houston for the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Houston, the university announced on Sunday afternoon. The game kicks off on Dec. 31 at noon ET. Wildcast quarterback Dan Persa, aka PersaStrong, will face the very talented, but underachieving, Aggies who are now without a head coach after firing Mike Sherman earlier this week. Tim DeRuyter will handle the interim coaching duties. Who are you taking in this matchup?
