Indiana will gladly take ugly so far as the 1-3 Hoosiers have more than kept pace with Penn State so far. Let’s take a look at the first half. Penn State 3, Indiana 3 : Penn State quarterbacks Rob Bolden and Matt McGloin showed a sense of humor this week about their never-ending competition. It has been no laughing matter today. The Penn State offense looks like a total mess against the nation’s 78th-ranked defense. Neither Bolden nor McGloin has looked like Big Ten starting quarterbacks, as they’ve combined to complete 8 of 21 passes for 131 yards with no touchdowns and an interception in the end zone. Ugh. Does Penn State have two quarterbacks or no quarterbacks? We’d all like to see a decision made, but McGloin and Bolden aren’t making it easy. Maybe it’ll change in the second half. On the flip side, Indiana deserves a ton of credit for stifling Penn State, especially after last week’s loss to North Texas. Co-defensive coordinator Mike Ekeler called out the unit and it has responded, recording two takeaways and keeping Penn State out of the end zone. Dusty Kiel got the start at quarterback for Indiana because Ed Wright-Baker sustained a knee injury in practice this week. Kiel has completed 10 of 18 passes with an interception. He’s getting no help from the run game and needs to find ways to stretch the field in the second half. But Indiana is right there in this one, 30 minutes away from a confidence-boosting win.

The Darius Willis story has officially gone from sad to bizarre. Willis, if you recall, is an Indiana running back sidelined by knee problems since early last season. Coach Kevin Wilson said last week that Willis’ football career might be over, a position the coach reiterated Tuesday . Here’s where it gets weird. During Indiana’s loss to North Texas last Saturday night, Willis was participating in a pro wrestling event in Bloomington. The Indiana Daily Student reports Willis was summoned to the ring , where he helped pro wrestler PJB “take down his opponent with a flying shoulder tackle.” Oh yeah, there’s video . Well, at least we know Willis’ shoulder is OK. “I’ve just always wanted to be around it, wanted to come watch it,” Willis said Saturday after the match. “It was just something I wanted. I always watched wrestling and just wanted to go out and give it a try and see how it is.” Here’s the problem for Willis: Wilson didn’t know the running back planned to enter the wrestling ring . Wilson told reporters Wednesday that Willis remains on scholarship with the team and that they’re applying for Willis to be declared a medical hardship, which would end his career. As for whether an amateur college athlete entering a professional wrestling event is against NCAA eligibility requirements, Wilson slightly shrugged his shoulders. He stepped away from the circle of media crowded around him, as he said, “I don’t know.” The Daily Student reports Willis plans to wrestle again in November. Maybe he’ll go by Darius the Destroyer. I have no more words.

It’s finally official. Indiana’s new offensive coordinator is heading back to his old team. Boise State just announced that Brent Pease will return to the school and receive a promotion to offensive coordinator. Pease had previously worked with Boise State’s receivers before leaving to become Indiana’s offensive coordinator. But when Texas hired Boise State offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin to the same position days ago, Pease saw an opportunity to return. He wouldn’t have left Boise had he known Harsin would leave his post. “I’m very honored and fortunate to be able to return to Boise State,” Pease said in a statement released by Boise State. “While I was very much looking forward to the opportunity at Indiana, the knowledge and relationships I have with the players, coaches and administration at Boise State made it a very logical choice for me and my family.” Two things jump out to me about how much college football has changed in recent years. 1
