EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — NC State pulled off one of the more remarkable comebacks I’ve seen after coming back from 18 down to beat Texas 77-74 in the consolation game of the Legends Classic at the IZOD Center at the Meadowlands. Overview: Texas dominated the game early. The Longhorns had their way getting to the basket, creating shots for the perimeter players and exposing the Wolfpack’s inability to stop the ball either along the baseline or in front.

We have a new front-runner in the Legends Division. Does that also mean we have a new favorite to claim the Big Ten’s second BCS spot? Michigan State asserted itself as the team to beat in the Legends with a 28-14 victory over previously unbeaten Michigan on Saturday. That win lifted the Spartans up in our latest Big Ten bowl projections, as we now have them ticketed for a Tostitos Fiesta Bowl appearance. However, Michigan State has to play Wisconsin this week, and if it were to lose to the Badgers now and in the Big Ten title game but win out, that would mean a 9-3 final record. That might not be good enough for a BCS at-large bid, and it might crack the door open for another team — like Nebraska, Penn State or even Michigan — to grab the bid. If there is a second bid. Remember, teams that lose league title games are often shut out of BCS at-large berths. But for now we’ll give the nod to the Spartans and their unrelenting defense. Michigan and Penn State are both 6-1, but we like the Wolverines’ remaining schedule more than what the Nittany Lions must deal with in November. Ohio State moves up after a key win over Illinois, at the expense of those same Illini. Northwestern clings to our last bowl spot for now, but the 2-4 Wildcats have a lot of work to do to gain postseason eligibility. Purdue missed a big chance to get closer to bowl status with its five-point loss to Penn State. 1. Must read: Andy Katz’s interview of deposed Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe. He said the league picked up TCU as its 10th member because the Big 12 needs four Texas schools. That must be more important than the long-promoted idea that a new member increase the league’s TV footprint. Regarding the revenue-sharing rule that passed last week, Beebe said that Nebraska shot it down two years ago. He believes that if the rule had been in place, Nebraska and Colorado may have stayed. That sounds like wishful thinking

The second week of conference play brought the first major change to our weekly bowl projections: Nebraska is no longer picked to get a BCS at-large bid. No offense to the Huskers, whose comeback win over Ohio State was pretty special. We just have a hard time seeing this team going undefeated the rest of the way, and even one loss plus a setback in the Dec. 3 Big Ten title game would leave Nebraska at 9-3. So will the Big Ten get a second team into the BCS this year? And if so, who? The Legends Division looks wide smoking open. We say the Big Ten will get a second BCS team, if for no other reason than teams from the league remain very attractive to big bowls. Our choice for that second spot this week is Michigan. The Wolverines are 6-0 and are 2-0 in Big Ten play, with a pretty advantageous schedule the rest of the way. They are as much of a threat to get to Indianapolis as anyone in the Legends Division. One important change to our bowl order this week. We were reminded that the Insight Bowl will pick ahead of the Gator this year, so that game climbs a notch in our pecking order.
