#1 for now, but they’ll still have to prove it against a real opponent to keep it. The Longhorns handled business against the Owls, but they struggled offensively at times which could very well be due to early season jitters or mistakes. Ranked #2 in… Source: Rock Chalk Talk

The Longhorns still have some work to do. By the numbers, Texas was able to grind out 197 yards on 46 carries in a steady 34-17 season-opening win over Rice. Tre’ Newton, who had lost the starting tailback job to Cody Johnson, punched in three… Source: Temple Daily Telegram

Texas’ rushing attack unimpressive in win over Rice
Filed under News by on Sep 6th, 2010. Comment.
For the first time in years, I’ve lost faith in our Jumbo Package. The only time I can remember it being stuffed since its inception after Colt’s injury on a goal-line QB sneak against K-State, whose line we outweighed by 50 lbs per person, was on a 4th down try against Oklahoma last year when they put in their own Jumbo set against ours.
Rice stuffed us twice on the Jumbo. Rice. What does that mean? Are we not drilling it as hard as the other running sets? After the jump I break down all of the 3rd and shorts I could find.
All times are clock times from ESPN3 video, if you want to watch the attempts yourself:
31:30 – 3rd and inches ( Jumbo set, inside run. *FAIL* )
Hix runs right by ( after giving a half-hearted stiff arm to ) the man that stuffs Cody. Hix was on his way to God knows where
32:00 – 4th and inches ( Jumbo set, HB toss play. *FAIL* )
It looked like Norton ( #11 ) was playing in the jumbo, he kind of left Cody behind instead of slowing and catching the LB that ended up making the tackle. If it was Kirkendoll out there, also #11, then he looked big while leaving the RB behind. We should have 7 points, but instead turn the ball over on downs.
56:15 – 3rd and a yard ( 3 wide outs and a TE, man in motion inside hand off to Tre for TD. Success! )
Interesting that the first working short yardage play wasn’t from our jumbo set.
1:16:00 – 3rd and 3 ( 2 wide outs and a Half-Back, GG under center, inside run. Success )
Bad refereeing takes us from 2nd and less than 1 to 2nd and 5. We run once to bring up 3rd down and 3. Again, we move away from the jumbo package and Tre picks up a big 3 on 3rd down.
1:52:15 – 3rd and 3 ( 3 wide outs, under center. Short pass. Success )
6 yard run and 1 yard run by Cody bring up 3rd down. GG completion to Kirk moves the chains. GG looks for Kirk long on the next play but Kirk isn’t open.
2:01:45 – 3rd and 2 ( 2 wide outs, 2 TE, GG under center, Ace? – *FAIL* )
No hole opens up, Tre is hit at the LOS. Now that’s the running game we all remember. First Texas punt.
2:20:00 3rd and 3 ( 2 wide outs and a Half-Back. GG under center. inside run. Success. )
After failing on the last 3rd and short, we go back to one of the plays that worked. It worked again, breaking a streak of 3 failed 3rd down attempts ( one short, two long ).
2:25:00 1st and goal on the 3. ( 2 wide outs and a half-back, same as the previous short yardage attempt. Gain of 2 and a half. – *FAIL* )
Almost made it in, but Tre is stood up at the goal line.
2:25:40 2nd and goal inside the 1. ( Same formation as before, same play. TD. Success )
Well, the last attempt got two and a half, and we need less than that. Let’s run it again. TD.
I got the impression that we had been drilling our standard running game more than our Jumbo set, because after its initial two failures, Davis reverted to running standard running plays on short yardage. While seemingly working better, we still failed 1 time for every three attempts when Rice was expecting the run. Depending on how you look at it, it could be good or bad. 66% success on third down? Not bad, I think. But against Rice on obvious run downs, I think the Longhorns may have their goals set higher.

But even against the Owls, Texas averaged a so-so 4.3 yards per carry. Tre Newton scored three touchdowns but it’s still fair to wonder if the Longhorns have a true No. 1 tailback on their roster. With a game at Texas Tech only two weeks away, Texas… Source: The Seattle Times

Not sure. The Longhorns have won the last 11 meetings and 39 of the last 40. The last loss to the Owls was in 1994, when the 12th-ranked Horns fell in Rice Stadium, 19-17. Shame on you Mackovic. The 17 points given up to Rice accounted for half of the… Source: Burnt Orange Nation :: A Texas Longhorns Blog

Texas vs Rice: Inside the Numbers
Filed under News by on Sep 5th, 2010. Comment.
1. The league’s top defenses still have a lot to prove. Texas and Oklahoma were wholly unimpressive in their debuts, although Texas’ mistakes weren’t nearly as costly. Of the three supposedly elite defenses in the Big 12, Oklahoma looked the worst, giving up 341 yards and two touchdowns through the air to Utah State’s Diondre Borel . Meanwhile, Nebraska gave up 179 yards on the ground to Western Kentucky in a performance coach Bo Pelini called “an absolute embarrassment.” Texas wasn’t gashed as badly against Rice, and gave up just 219 total yards, but the Longhorns defensive backs missed a handful of big plays. All three have to get a lot better to equal either of their 2009 editions. 2. The most impressive team in Week 1: Oklahoma State. Dana Holgorsen’s Air Raid went nuts on Saturday night, racing all over the field at Boone Pickens Stadium for 544 yards and 65 points — 38 in the first half. Kendall Hunter ran for four touchdowns and the Cowboys won the turnover battle 2-0. The Cowboys made fans a little nervous after letting Washington State inch to within 17-10 from an early 17-0 deficit, but Oklahoma State answered with the game’s next five touchdowns to put the game … uh … out of reach. 3. Hes baaa-aack. Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin once again showcased his big-play capability, rushing for a 30-yard touchdown and throwing for two more — a 68-yarder to Brad Taylor and a 23-yarder to Terrance Williams . He completed 19 of 36 passes for 242 yards and ran for 59 yards on six carries, a 9.8 yard average. 4. Kansas? Well, they’re just not very good. Hard to envision a worse start for Turner Gill at Kansas. At least Ole Miss’ 49-48 loss to an FCS team in double overtime was fun to watch. The Jayhawks 6-3 debacle had to be painful for fans watching at home and even more so for those in attendance. It’s hard to find many positives from a mistake-laden performance at home against the Bison, who went 3-8 last season. I’ll try: My preseason prediction of the Jayhawks as the Big 12’s most improved team at season’s end is looking pretty good. There’s nowhere to go but up, but it’s still hard to believe how far Kansas has fallen since a BCS bowl win in 2007. I got a few complaints after I pegged the Jayhawks at No. 12 in my preseason power rankings . I doubt I’ll get any when they’re right back there again on Tuesday morning. When Kansas suits up next weekend against No. 19 Georgia Tech, it will have been over 11 months (Oct. 10, 2009 vs. Iowa State) since the program has recorded a win. 5. I was 100 percent wrong about Kendall Hunter. It’s easy to forget how good a guy can be when he struggles for so long like he did last year. The ankle injury must have affected him longer and more than anyone thought. You heard all spring and preseason about how Holgorsen thought Hunter was even better than he had been told, and Hunter validated all of that on Saturday night. Dominant, unstoppable, whatever. Use all the hyperbolic terms you want.
