WACO, Texas — In the days and practices since Kansas center Jeff Withey went 0-fer in Saturday’s three-point loss at No. 4 Missouri, there haven’t been many moments when one or more teammates haven’t been in his face. “We have been screaming at him at practice every day,” KU guard Tyshawn Taylor said. “We were punching him in the chest, trying to get him fired up.” Turns out Withey cannot only take a punch, but deliver one as well. The 7-footer scored a career-high 25, 17 of those in the first half, as No.

Colleague Chris Low weighed in with a column today as we said goodbye to Missouri on the Big 12 blog, offering up some thoughts on realignment from the SEC’s perspective. From a purely football perspective, the league has never been healthier. What will Missouri and Texas A&M add to the equation? The truth is that both schools probably needed the SEC more than the SEC needed them. The fertile recruiting ground in the state of Texas will be more inviting than ever before for SEC coaches now that a marquee school from that state is in the league.

It wasn’t the kind of surprise first-year Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin was hoping for on signing day. ESPNU 150 receiver Bralon Addison of Missouri City, Texas, has flipped from Texas A&M to Oregon. Addison had been committed to the Aggies since the spring when Mike Sherman was still the Texas A&M head coach. He’s rated as the No. 18 receiver prospect in the country.

AUSTIN, Texas — In all the fury, Frank Haith implored Michael Dixon to remain calm. “There is no time to panic and no time to stress,” the Missouri coach told his guard. Really if ever there were a time, this would have been it. Dixon had just committed a flagrant foul by swinging his elbow above the shoulders of Julien Lewis. The ensuing foul shot and possession gave Texas 66-65 lead. And No. 4 Missouri (20-2, 7-2) was suddenly down on the road with less than a minute to go after seemingly taking complete control just minutes earlier.

How the game was won: Missouri got to the rim when it wanted to and, more importantly, when it needed to. And trailing by 66-65 with less than 50 seconds left, the No. 4 Tigers desperately needed to get a basket. Michael Dixon Jr. came through, taking it down the left side and using his left hand to float in a layup to give Missouri the 67-66 win at the Frank Erwin Center on Monday night. The layup capped off a furious stretch in which Dixon went from goat to hero.

Saddle Up is our semi-daily preview of the night’s best basketball action. No. 4 Missouri at Texas, 9 p.m. ET, ESPN: The 2011-12 Missouri Tigers are not known for their defense. That’s not because the Tigers’ defense is particularly bad; it’s more like average, or slightly above. But beyond that, the main reason the Tigers aren’t known for their defense is their offense. We think about Missouri as an offensive team not only because the Tigers were an offensive, fast-break style team throughout former coach Mike Anderson’s tenure, but because this current group of Missouri Tigers happens to be really, really awesome at scoring the ball.
