Texas takes on Cal on Wednesday night in the Holiday Bowl. We previewed the game earlier, now it’s time for a look at three keys for Texas to get the win. 1. Work hard in bowl practices. So yeah, this one’s technically already happened, but we won’t see the results until tonight. Texas’ offense was young and banged up, but had a ton of room for improvement, mostly with the offensive line, receivers and running backs. The Longhorns didn’t get to participate in the valuable workouts after last year’s 5-7 season, so here’s guessing they took those pretty seriously.

It’s hard to imagine what argument would need to be made for record-setting running back Johnathan Gray to receive every national award for which he qualifies. Yet, Rivals High choose Trey Williams as the Offensive Player of the Year, then declined to even make any argument about why Williams is better.

Here’s a few things to keep an eye on in the bowl games involving teams from the Big 12 this year. 1. The headless Aggies. A team playing in a bowl after firing its coach is a bit of a rarity, but that’s where the Aggies are as they prepare to face Northwestern on Dec. 31 in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. Defensive coordinator and interim head coach Tim DeRuyter is leaving to become the coach at Fresno State. Former coach Mike Sherman served as their offensive coordinator, too, and it’ll be interesting to see what Texas A&M looks like without him.

Injuries and a big game from K-State force a lot of movement on the offensive list this week. Still not much movement defensively. Offensive Player of the Year 1. Brandon Weeden, QB, Oklahoma State: Weeden is holding strong at the top of this list after a 423-yard, five-touchdown day in a 66-6 win over Texas Tech. He’s the Big 12 leader with 31 touchdown passes and his 3,635 passing yards lead by almost 300 yards. He’s nearly running away with this.

1. Lest we forget, LSU is No. 1 even though the offensive coordinator job is performed by committee after Steve Kragthorpe, hired last winter, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Kragthorpe has remained as quarterback coach. “When a coach has a physical illness,” Tigers head coach Les Miles said Tuesday, “it’s so wonderful to see the rest of the staff pull together, overcome deficits and make them strengths.” As to Kragthorpe’s contribution, Miles said, “We have the finest quarterback coach I’ve been around.” 2. The 16 seniors named as finalists for the Campbell Trophy — the Academic Heisman — include 14 team captains and have a collective 3.81 GPA. They are a mix of the well-known (quarterbacks Kirk Cousins of Michigan State and Ryan Tannehill of Texas A&M), the less-known (Dubuque wide receiver Michael Zweifel) to the know-it-all (Army linebacker Andrew Rodriguez has a 4.14 GPA in mechanical engineering). Each finalist receives an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. They are the best the sport has to offer. 3. If you’re not a fan of punting — and that includes just about everyone, doesn’t it? — then watch No. 6 Stanford play at USC on Saturday night. The Cardinal and the Trojans rank 1-2 in the FBS for fewest “three-and-outs.” Stanford has committed that egregious insult to offense on 6.3 percent of its possessions; USC, 7.0 percent. Last week, Stanford scored on 10 of 11 possessions with one three-and-out.
