For now, though, Texas ‘ quarterback picture is dicey. After starting the season with four scholarship quarterbacks, the Longhorns are down to only McCoy and Ash. Connor Wood transferred to Colorado before the opener. Coach Mack Brown said Gilbert,… Source: Austin American-Statesman

Conference Opener to Holy War Rivalry: What Utah Has to Prove vs. BYU

AUSTIN, Texas — Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads rudely delayed my arrival , but I’ve made it inside a scorching hot Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium for Texas’ matchup with BYU. The Longhorns looked good in their opener, but Rice is Rice: Better known as a bed for various meats than a team that can beat Texas. This week? It’s going to be a lot different. Texas is favored, but BYU is a quality team very capable of beating the Longhorns. I picked the Cougars to do it. Jake Heaps looked rough in the opener last week at Ole Miss, but he’s better than that. So, too, Garrett Gilbert will have to be after last week’s solid performance against the Owls. He looked like a more confident player while meeting with the media on Monday, but that doesn’t mean much if that confidence doesn’t carry onto the field on Saturdays. It’s a big early season test for the Longhorns, and we’ll get a good idea tonight at how far Texas can climb from last season’s 5-7 finish. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Time for the real fun to begin at Texas

We have some movement this week in the SEC Power Rankings, including a new No. 1 team: 1. LSU: The Tigers (1-0) have a strong case to be the top team in college football after taking down No. 3-ranked Oregon last Saturday in Arlington, Texas. It’s only one game, but LSU looks every bit as fast, deep and talented on defense as we heard John Chavis’ unit would be coming into this season. Simply, it’s the kind of defense you win championships with, but the Tigers still need to put some more pop into that passing game. 2. Alabama: It’s not that Alabama (1-0) did anything to lose its hold on the No. 1 spot, but more a reward for LSU leaving home and winning convincingly over a top-5 team. The Crimson Tide get a chance to flex their muscles this weekend on a big stage when they travel to Penn State. They were dominant defensively in the opener, holding Kent State to 90 total yards. 3. Arkansas: In a lot of leagues, the Hogs (1-0) would be a solid No. 1. They were extremely impressive in all three phases in their season-opening 51-7 win over Missouri State. Tyler Wilson threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns. The defense held Missouri State to 163 total yards, and Joe Adams returned two punts for touchdowns. It’s probably going to be a similar story the next two weeks, meaning Arkansas won’t get its first real test until it visits Alabama in Week 4. 4. Mississippi State: The Bulldogs (1-0) have a little extra time to prepare for this Saturday’s key game at Auburn after destroying Memphis 59-14 last Thursday. Dan Mullen felt like this would be his best team, and there’s no reason to doubt him after seeing Mississippi State roll up nearly 650 yards in total offense in its opener. This also appears to be a more explosive Mississippi State team with a quarterback ( Chris Relf ) who just keeps getting better. 5. South Carolina: The Gamecocks (1-0) dropped a spot even though they ended up winning going away in a 56-37 victory over East Carolina. The thing that’s difficult to ignore is South Carolina’s sloppy start and the fact that the Gamecocks turned the ball over four times. They fell behind 17-0, and to their credit, had more than enough resolve and firepower to fight back. It’s obvious this team responds to senior quarterback Stephen Garcia , too. When he entered the huddle, the game changed. 6. Florida: The Will Muschamp era at Florida has begun, and the Gators (1-0) breezed past outmanned Florida Atlantic 41-3 in the opener. We still don’t know a whole lot about this team and probably won’t until the Tennessee game the third week of the season. But judging from last Saturday’s performance, the Gators are super athletic in their front seven on defense and are going to lean hard on speedy running backs Chris Rainey and Jeff Demps on offense. 7. Tennessee: The Vols (1-0) took care of business against Montana in the opener, and sophomore quarterback Tyler Bray looked sharp with three touchdown passes. Going back to last season, he’s thrown 18 touchdown passes in his last six games. Tennessee still needs to rev up that running game and may need to do so this Saturday when Cincinnati comes to town. The Bearcats romped 72-10 over Austin Peay last week and scored points in bunches. 8.

SEC power rankings: Week 2

We’re a week into the 2011 college football season, which means somebody’s hot and somebody’s not in the SEC. You’ve come to know this little exercise as Hot and Not, and it’s back for another season: GLOWING EMBERS LSU’s resiliency: What distractions? The Tigers ventured into Cowboys Stadium last Saturday with everybody wondering how they could possibly be on top of their game after everything that had happened off the field with quarterback Jordan Jefferson ’s arrest. Never mind that they were playing the No. 3-ranked team in the country, and never mind that they were playing without three offensive starters. They never flinched and methodically took apart Oregon 40-27 in a win that should move the Tigers closer to that top spot in the polls. LSU coach Les Miles is no stranger to dealing with a crisis. Remember the terrible hurricanes in 2005, his first season as LSU’s coach, and the way he guided his team to an 11-2 record despite the Tigers having to move home games and most of the LSU campus serving as a medical triage? It’s obvious that Miles’ teams don’t lose their focus despite what’s happening off the field, and it’s just as obvious that this team has everything it takes — physically and mentally — to win a national championship. HOT South Carolina spur Antonio Allen: He lines up at spur in South Carolina’s defense, which is a hybrid safety/linebacker position. That’s fitting, because the 6-foot-2, 202-pound senior spurred the Gamecocks to a 56-37 win against East Carolina with a career night. He had 16 total tackles and forced two fumbles, both of which he recovered. He returned one of those fumbles 25 yards for a touchdown to help the Gamecocks pull away from the Pirates. NOT Auburn’s defense: Defensive coordinator Ted Roof vowed that he would get it fixed, and there’s a lot of fixing to do. Utah State piled up 27 first downs and 448 yards of total offense last Saturday, but Auburn escaped 42-38 thanks to a perfectly executed onside kick. There are a lot of new faces on that Auburn defense that will have to grow up in a hurry. HOT Mississippi State’s offense: You think the Bulldogs are salivating at the thought of going up against that Auburn defense after the way the Tigers were sliced and diced by Utah State? Granted, Mississippi State did its damage against Memphis, but the Bulldogs exploded for a school-record 645 yards in total offense in their 59-14 rout and scored five touchdowns that were 35 yards or longer. NOT Georgia’s momentum: The Bulldogs were hoping to go into their SEC opener against South Carolina with some momentum. Instead, they go into Saturday’s home game against the Gamecocks with their backs squarely against the wall. An 0-2 start would go over in Athens about the same way a going-away party would for Texas A&M right now in Austin. HOT Arkansas receiver Joe Adams : He’s easily one of the best receivers in the league, but worked his open-field magic last weekend on a pair of punt returns for touchdowns. He scooted 61 yards in the first quarter and 69 yards in the third quarter, becoming the first SEC player to return two punts for touchdowns in the same game since Kentucky’s Derek Abney in 2002. NOT South Carolina’s start: The Gamecocks looked more like the No. 12-ranked team in the SEC for much of the first half in their opener against East Carolina. They rebounded to win 56-37, but won’t be able to get away with falling behind 17-0 against most SEC teams. HOT LSU nickel back Tyrann Mathieu: If you like watching defense played at light speed, you’re going to love this LSU defense. Mathieu played every defensive snap (82) in the win against Oregon and led the Tigers with 10 tackles. He also forced a fumble in punt coverage that he returned 3 yards for a touchdown. Wherever the ball is, you can bet Mathieu will be there, too. NOT Kentucky’s offensive line: Maybe it was just a bad first game, but even coach Joker Phillips said his offensive line play was disappointing in the Wildcats’ 14-3 lackluster win against Western Kentucky. The Wildcats have had some nagging injuries in their offensive line
