1. Texas A&M had to put a halt this week in what surely will be a year-long celebration of its move to the SEC in order to learn how the league goes about its business. The school sent its top athletic administrators to the SEC office in Birmingham on Tuesday to learn how the league does things, from reading through its by-laws to addressing how the league pays its officials. The mundane always follows the excitement. 2. You could tell when Oregon corner Cliff Harris, a 2010 All-American, returned to the lineup after his preseason suspension that something had gone awry. Harris didn’t resemble the ballhawk and kick returner who a year ago had been a threat to score every time he stepped onto the field. On Monday, Kelly suspended Harris again after his arrest again during a traffic stop. Harris needs to have a discussion with himself about how important football — and a free college education — is to him. 3. Speaking of unfulfilled potential, three’s USC sophomore tailback Dillon Baxter . Before the 2010 season — before Baxter had played a down — Trojans coach Lane Kiffin used Baxter’s name and the Heisman Trophy in the same sentence. On Tuesday, Kiffin announced that Baxter no longer was on the team, but that he would remain enrolled in school. He has rushed 68 times for 281 yards and one touchdown. When you hear coaches talk about recruiting character instead of characters, this is why.

After one week of games, we’ve figured out exactly where every Big Ten team is going bowling. (Insert guffaw here). Sure, we’re still doing a lot of speculating and projecting here, but it’s fun to do. We didn’t see a whole lot in Week 1 that changed our minds about our preseason bowl picks, except we erased Purdue as an at-large bowl team. Not that the 1-0 Boilermakers can’t win at least five more, but we want to see a little more evidence that they’re capable of that. On to our ridiculously early bowl picks: Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO: Wisconsin vs. BCS team Tostitos Fiesta Bowl: Nebraska vs. BCS team Capital One Bowl: Ohio State vs. SEC team Outback Bowl: Iowa vs. SEC team Gator Bowl: Penn State vs. SEC team Insight Bowl: Michigan State vs. Big 12 team Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas: Michigan vs. Big 12 team TicketCity Bowl: Illinois vs. Big 12 team Little Caesars Pizza Bowl: Northwestern vs. MAC team

As promised, the freshmen were everywhere. Texas coach Mack Brown talked about this freshman class being special during the preseason, and it appears the Longhorn coaching staff can pat itself on the back for a good job evaluating.

Texas A&M made its intention clear on Wednesday. It plans to leave the Big 12 , presumably for the SEC. Gray But even as those rumors and whispers turned to hard news, the focus is still the same on the field for the Aggies. “I don’t really know too much about it,” running back Cyrus Gray told ESPN.com on Wednesday, just hours after the university made its big announcement. “I hear stuff here and there, and I know as a team and as players, we’re not really concerned about that. I think our main goal and main concern right now is SMU.” Gray says he didn’t know much about it for one reason. He hasn’t been following it. “Not at all. Not close at all. I don’t think it’s that important right now,” Gray said. “I’m a senior. I’ve got one more year here and I’m trying to make it count and play with the parts we have here.” That’s not hard when the team’s real leader, coach Mike Sherman, isn’t talking about it and makes sure, as he’s said several times this preseason, the only three letters on his team’s mind are “S-M-U.” “He’s so motivating and always just worrying about the next opponent. SMU has been his main concern since Day 1. He doesn’t talk about anything else, we just talk about winning and what we’re going to do to prepare for these guys. That’s been the most important thing right now on campus,” Gray said.  ”Our main thing is SMU, and that’s the main thing everybody’s riled up about around here.”
