The Big 12 has been hampered by injuries in recent weeks. Missouri running back Henry Josey, the Big 12’s leading rusher, was the latest to fall. He tore his ACL, MCL and patellar tendon — a situation serious enough to put his 2012 season in question. Texas running back Fozzy Whittaker, who scored nine touchdowns this year, also went down with a torn ACL in Saturday’s victory over Missouri. Two weeks ago, Oklahoma receiver Ryan Broyles and Texas A&M running back Christine Michael suffered torn ACLs and will miss the remainder of the season.

Could it be that Texas A&M is the only team the SEC adds, at least for now? The SEC is denying reports that the SEC has decided to add Missouri as the 14th team and move Auburn to the Eastern Division. Here’s what the SEC’s official statement said, which was released by associate commissioner Charles Bloom: “The Southeastern Conference has not agreed formally or informally to accept any institution other than Texas A&M, and there have not been conference discussions regarding changes in divisional alignments.” Obviously, this is an extremely fluid situation, and what happens with Texas is going to drive the remainder of any movement we see in terms of conference realignment. The SEC has said it has a contingency plan to play next season with 13 teams, although that wouldn’t be ideal. There have been reports that the SEC rejected West Virginia, and it makes sense that Missouri would probably want to remain in the Big 12 if it survives. Officials at Auburn have said they wouldn’t oppose a move to the Eastern Division. Alabama and Auburn could still play every year in that format and also could potentially meet in the SEC championship game. However, such a move would mean rivalries like Alabama-Tennessee and Auburn-LSU would no longer be played every year.

Texas quarterback  Garrett Gilbert underwent shoulder surgery Tuesday morning and is out for the remainder of the season , the school announced Tuesday. Gilbert suffered the injury in the season opener against Rice, and the symptoms got progressively worse. He was benched midway through Texas’ win over BYU the following week after completing 2 of 8 passes for eight yards and two interceptions. “My shoulder was getting progressively worse and when the doctors did an MRI last week, their recommendation was for me to get it fixed,” Gilbert said in a release. “That’s why I decided to have the surgery now, so I can get it taken care of, start my rehab and be healthy and ready to go for next year.” Gilbert obviously had his struggles, but this is still a big surprise. Texas is off this week, so its normal media availability was canceled on Monday, but rumors of the injury hadn’t surfaced before Tuesday’s surprising announcement. Gilbert, a native of Austin, Texas, threw for 2,744 yards, 10 touchdowns and 17 interceptions during the Longhorns’ 5-7 season in 2010. Through two-plus games in 2011, he had completed 15-of-31 passes for 247 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. See the full story here .

ARLINGTON, Texas–Texas A&M linebacker Michael Hodges will miss the remainder of the game with a right knee injury. He entered the game with 111 tackles, and already had four in the first quarter before leaving. There’s no doubt he’ll be missed in a big way by the Aggies. Look no further than LSU’s last drive, which resulted in a touchdown to put the Tigers ahead 14-10 after an early 10-0 spurt by the Aggies. LSU threw exactly one pass on the drive, and it was incomplete. It ran eight times for 60 yards and finished it off with a touchdown. Without Hodges in the lineup, and unless the Aggies can slow an uncharacteristically leaky run defense for the final two-plus quarters, the offense is going to need to put plenty more points on the board to keep up.
