With recruiting heating up, we’re taking a look at The Great State Debate this week. Big 12 fans — and plenty of others — are surely familiar with Texas quarterbacks. At some point, they’ve probably been a fan of a few. Program greats like Chase Daniel and Todd Reesing even hail from Texas and achieved greatness outside the state. This year, the top four quarterbacks in the NFL draft were all from Texas: Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, Nick Foles and Ryan Tannehill.

Baylor quarterback and Heisman winner Robert Griffin III will hold a news conference in Waco, Texas Wednesday to announce whether he’ll stay for his senior season or leave for the NFL. A family source told colleague Chris Mortensen this week that Griffin will turn pro and was in the process of selecting an agent. The deadline for underclassmen to formally petition for the NFL draft is Sunday. Griffin is projected as a top-10 pick and several personnel officials believe he could go high as the first or second choice depending on his pre-draft workouts and evaluations.

Time to predict the non-BCS Pac-12 bowl games after Christmas. The season record is 67-24. Bridgepoint Education Holiday, Dec. 28 Texas 24, California 21: Cal finished strong, Texas did not, but we still worry about the Bears. You want to believe. This feels like a defensive struggle, but Texas should have enough offense to win this in the fourth quarter. Valero Alamo, Dec. 29 Baylor 44, Washington 38: The Huskies’ defense might surprise some folks early, and the offense should be able to keep up with Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III for a while.

Baylor hosted a pretty raucous celebration on Saturday night when quarterback Robert Griffin III won the Heisman, and they’ll get a couple more chances to celebrate with RG3 later this week. On Wednesday, he’ll be honored at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Bethune-Cookman. Tickets? Well, they’re $3, of course, in honor of the man of the night. Thursday, Griffin will receive a key to his hometown, Copperas Cove, Texas. Halftime of the basketball game will kick off with a highlight video before RG3 makes his entrance with the school’s first Heisman Trophy.

Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon won the Biletnikoff Award on Thursday night for the second consecutive year during “The Home Depot College Football Awards” show. The Cowboys star becomes the second player in college football history to repeat as the Biletnikoff winner, after Texas Tech’s Michael Crabtree in 2007 and 2008. He’s already the second Big 12 player to take home an award tonight, after Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III won the Davey O’Brien Award.

WTH?! (What the Heck?) moments are attempts to find the memorable and the off-beat perspective on Longhorns sports. Here are some interesting moments from the Texas’ game against the Bears. Pre-Game WTH Baylor?! This is the Big 12! This is the big boy league. I understand showing school pride to the 46,453 fans that attended the game. But having a tarp that says “This is Bear Country” in the end zone to cover up seats that should be watching RG3 versus the Horns. Come on Man! 1st Quarter (14:38) WTH RG3?! C’mon Bears give the opposing team a chance to get their head in the game. The Horns defense which includes Blake Gideon watched a perfect throw by Robert Griffin to a streaking Kendall Wright for a 59 yard touchdown on the SECOND play of the game. 1st Quarter (:33) WTH Irby?! Who does not love Blaine Irby? He made a helluva catch in the back of the end zone for the first touchdown of the night for the Horns. Do you think he might have any eligibility left

We’ve reached the season’s conclusion, and with it, the Big 12 has only one Heisman finalist among the five that will go to New York this week for Saturday’s announcement. 1. Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor Last week: 15-22, 320 yards, 2 TD, INT. 12 carries, 32 yards, 2 TD in a 48-24 win over Texas. Making the case for Griffin III: RG3 bounced back from concussion-like symptoms against Texas Tech last week to lead the Bears to a win over Texas for a second consecutive season.
