ARLINGTON, Texas — Oklahoma’s defense had heard the legends about Johnny Football. They’d seen the highlight reels and trophy acceptance speeches. Until Friday, though, it had never stepped on the same field with the first freshman to ever win a Heisman Trophy. After Texas A&M’s 20-year-old superstar rolled over the Sooners for 516 total yards (229 passing, 287 throwing) and four touchdowns in a 41-13 Cotton Bowl victory, Oklahoma couldn’t help but be glad his college years will be spent on fields across the SEC and not the Big 12 — where the Aggies would have been if not for some conference upheaval over the past two years.

Three keys for Oklahoma in tonight’s AT&T Cotton Bowl against Texas A&M: 1. Protect Landry Jones, and the ball: When the Sooners have kept Jones upright, he’s been lethal throwing the ball to a quartet of playmaking receivers. But the few times that opposing defenses have gotten pressure, Jones has been subject to making major mistakes, notably in a loss to Kansas State earlier this season. This will be OU’s toughest protection test yet, as the Aggies feature one of the top sack artists in the country in Damontre Moore.

There’s big trouble for one of Oklahoma’s cornerbacks, Joe Powell. Powell hasn’t played much leading up to the Sooners’ date with Texas A&M in the Cotton Bowl, but this is a bad look for Oklahoma in a quiet part of the season. From SoonerNation’s Jake Trotter: According to Cleveland County district attorney Greg Mashburn, Sooners cornerback Joe Powell has a preliminary conference hearing scheduled for Dec. 18 on charges of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

FORT WORTH, Texas — Yet again, it came down to the final drive. Facing fourth-and-13 in the final seconds, TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin lofted a potential game-tying pass toward Josh Boyce in the end zone. But Julian Wilson and Tony Jefferson collapsed on Boyce to tip the pass away. Yet again, Oklahoma found a way. “That’s how we’ve been doing things,” coach Bob Stoops said. “Making it exciting.” After taking down West Virginia on a last-second touchdown drive, then beating Oklahoma State in overtime, the Sooners prevailed over TCU 24-17 with a red zone stand in another fourth-quarter thriller to capture at least a share of the Big 12 title and likely a BCS bowl berth.

FORT WORTH, Texas — This wasn’t the Big 12 shootout fans of the Big 12 (or even Oklahoma these past few weeks) have become accustomed to this season. It was a physical, fast game, but the Frogs couldn’t swing the upset. Oklahoma likely clinches a BCS bid and has earned at least a share of the Big 12 title. TCU made it interesting late when Oklahoma’s Michael Hunnicutt missed a 42-yard field goal that would have iced the game, but the Sooners held on and earned a difficult win.

For only the third time in the history of the Red River Rivalry, the Oklahoma Sooners put up at least 60 points on the Texas Longhorns. And all three times have come since Bob Stoops took over at Oklahoma in 1999. Stoops’ first win in this series came in 2000, 63-14. In 2003, OU won 65-13, and on Saturday the Sooners won 63-15. Combined with last year’s 38-point loss (55-17), this marks the first time Texas has lost to Oklahoma by at least 38 points in back-to-back seasons.
