You hear it every year, but let’s take an official look back at the Big 12 preseason media poll, compared to actual finish by season’s end. Each team’s finish is compared with its preseason projection in parentheses. 1. Oklahoma (-3): Oklahoma received 41 of 43 first-place votes, but suffered its first loss at home against Texas Tech on Oct. 22, in its fourth conference game. It finished 6-3 in Big 12 play and 9-3 overall, tied for third with Baylor, but Baylor held the tiebreaker over the Sooners via its 45-38 win on Nov.

WACO, Texas — Robert Griffin III made his way into Baylor’s locker room, but paused when he opened the door. Nobody was there. “I was like, where’d everybody go?” They were still on the field celebrating. There was a postgame party at Floyd Casey Stadium, and everybody wearing green and gold was invited. The Bears had swiped the Sooners’ picnic basket. Before tonight, Baylor had never had a chance to celebrate a win over Oklahoma. With a 34-yard toss from Griffin to Terrance Williams in the back corner of the end zone, that all changed.

WACO, Texas — I wouldn’t flick the upset alert switch just yet, but Baylor’s looking like a top-25 team through the first quarter against Oklahoma. The Sooners and Bears are locked in an uncharacteristic defensive battle and tied at 3. The Bears secondary has slowed Sooners quarterback Landry Jones tonight while the Bears offense has struggled with a fast, physical pass rush from maybe the best defensive-end duo in the country, Frank Alexander and Ronnell Lewis.

So, Bob Stoops is passing up opportunities to convince voters his team deserves a chance to play for all the crawdads in the Bayou this January? “I don’t think we have to,” Stoops said. “We’ll see. I wasn’t much on lobbying much the last time we were in that situation, and it worked pretty good.” The last time was back in 2008, when the Sooners got the Big 12 title nod over Texas and Texas Tech, eventually landing in the national title game. But Stoops has especially good reason to save his breath for now.

Sooners best BCS title argument: Big wins

1. No. 4 Stanford’s 38-13 victory in a cold rain at Oregon State came at a cost. Both wide receiver Chris Owusu (concussion) and tight end Levine Toilolo went out of the game with injuries, one week after Stanford lost tight end Zach Ertz . It reminds me of Florida State in 1991, which won its first 10 games, the eighth a 27-16 victory in the rain at LSU. The Seminoles suffered so many injuries that night that they didn’t have the juice to beat Miami or Florida at season’s end. This beat-up Stanford team must play No. 7 Oregon. 2. The only two teams among the top eight that don’t play another team in the top eight are No. 3 Alabama and No. 5 Boise State. The Broncos need No. 15 Georgia to keep winning, starting with No. 20 Auburn on Saturday. The Tide must have No. 8 Arkansas win at No. 1 LSU on Nov. 25, and even then would have to negotiate their way through a three-way tie for first in the SEC West with the Tigers and the Hogs to get to the SEC championship game. I just don’t see a non-champion playing for the crystal football. 3. Oklahoma wide receiver Ryan Broyles ’ season ends with him atop the FBS in receiving yards (1,157 yards) and second in yards per game (128.56). Broyles suffered a torn ACL in the Sooners’ 41-25 victory over Texas A&M. The Sooners have had an uncanny number of injuries over the past few seasons. Coach Bob Stoops says it’s nothing more than bad luck. Strength coach Jerry Schmitt is considered one of the best in the business. But you have to wonder.

Oh, what a difference a week makes. Just imagine, if a few balls had bounced differently in Los Angeles Coliseum. Oklahoma State has retained its spot in the driver’s seat of the Big 12 and road to the BCS Championship Game, but don’t sleep on Oklahoma. The No. 6 Sooners are the highest-ranked one-loss team, and blew out an undefeated, top-10 team on the road on Saturday while Clemson fell. Stanford looked very beatable, but escaped in triple overtime. There’s a big gap between the Sooners and the two undefeated teams ahead of them, but all of a sudden, the road is clear. Oklahoma still needs Stanford and Boise to lose. Put on your TCU hats with some Oregon and Notre Dame shirts, Sooners fans. Oklahoma’s biggest minus is who beat it. Texas Tech’s loss on Saturday may kill the Sooners chances at season’s end.

1. One by one, the challengers to Alabama junior tailback Trent Richardson for the Doak Walker Running Back Award have been felled by injury. Oregon junior LaMichael James , the 2010 winner, led the nation in rushing when he dislocated his elbow earlier this month. South Carolina sophomore Marcus Lattimore and, as of Wednesday night, Pittsburgh junior Ray Graham have suffered season-ending knee injuries. If Richardson stays healthy, the award is his to lose. Of course, staying healthy has been the problem. 2. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) told Chuck Todd on MSNBC’s Daily Rundown on Wednesday that West Virginia University “had a done deal” with the Big 12 before politics — ewwww — entered the fray. Manchin suggested that Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) may have intervened with the conference on behalf of Louisville. To counter the use of politics, Manchin suggested a Senate hearing. I’m guessing the irony went completely over his head.
