COLUMBIA, S.C. — Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville dropped by South Carolina’s spring practice a few weeks ago and brought along his son, Tucker, to chat with Steve Spurrier. Tucker, a quarterback, would like to come back to the South and play college football — and he’s interested in possibly walking on at South Carolina. Tuberville and Spurrier matched wits in some epic SEC battles back when Tuberville was at Auburn and Spurrier at Florida.

Mike Leach is not afraid of the weather in Pullman, Wash., which could be a bit nippy — and perhaps snowy — for the first day of Washington State’s spring practices on Thursday. Heck, it’s not like his first spring practice leading the Cougars could be more inclement than his first leading Texas Tech in 2000. Cold? Snow? Not as bad as hail. “It’s flying off their helmets like popcorn,” Leach said recalling his first practice in Lubbock. Or do you know what happens when a hard rain meets a dust storm?

West Virginia are the new guys on the block in the Big 12, but its coach has been around the Big 12 block plenty. Dana Holgorsen did stints at Texas Tech and Oklahoma State (with Houston in between) before being named the Mountaineers’ head coach. The Mountaineers kicked off spring practice Sunday, but he took some time over the weekend while in New York for the Big East men’s basketball tournament (“It’s a great event. … It’s the Garden, man, and it’s right in the heart of the Big Apple,” he said) to talk to ESPN.
