1. Terrelle Pryor appears to be the gift that can’t stop taking from Ohio State. Now his attorney, David Cornwell, is arguing that because Pryor admitted violations to the NCAA in May — violations about which Ohio State officials say they know nothing — he would not be eligible to play for the Buckeyes this season, therefore he should be eligible for the NFL supplemental draft. I’m sure that Pryor didn’t keep confessing NCAA violations until the NFL decided he was draft material. His attorney just made it sound that way. 2. Georgia coach Mark Richt told me recently that his defense will play better in their second season in coordinator Todd Grantham’s 3-4 scheme. It’s not just that they can react instead of think. Richt said when an opposing offense showed something new, the players didn’t know how to respond. “We couldn’t say, ‘Remember last year when we saw…’” Richt said. If that’s the case, how exactly is Texas going to rebound from a 5-7 season with two new coordinators teaching two new schemes? 3. It’s mid-August and the excitement of practice starting has worn off. The excitement of the first game hasn’t arrived. It is, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said Wednesday, a great time to build a team. “The players are getting up at 5:00 in the morning after going to bed at 10:00 at night,” Gundy said. “Their bodies are sore and tired and there’s mental strain from the coaches putting it on the players, but that’s what camp is all about. If you’re going to be a good football team, you have to go through that grind…”

Three of the most talked-about players in Kansas State’s spring camp have never suited up in a Wildcats uniform. Expectations from fans and media are high for all three, but for now, coach Bill Snyder isn’t ready to tell anyone just what to expect. “These are quality young people, wonderful youngsters and very, very fine players,” he said during the Big 12’s conference call on Tuesday. “But I wouldn’t go beyond that at this point in time, because they haven’t, in either case, had the opportunity to step up and prove themselves.” Bryce and Arthur Brown are brothers and Wichita, Kan., natives. Bryce, a running back, originally signed with Tennessee before transferring back to Kansas State to be closer to home. Arthur, a linebacker, did the same after signing with Miami originally. Both were five-star recruits, among the best in their class at their positions. In Arthur Brown’s class, ESPN pegged only five players better than him, and four ( A.J

Welcome to another midweek mailbag! Some quibbles with my way too early 2011 preseason rankings, and more playoff talk. So let us get right to the questions. Michael in New York writes: Will teams like Boise St., TCU and Nevada ever get the respect and more importantly, opportunity, to prove their mettle? They consistently beat teams from the AQ conferences, during both the regular season and bowls. Finally time for a playoff, no?! Andrea Adelson writes: Well they do get the one scrap thrown to them when they get into a BCS game, but I am not sure how much more respect they are going to get even with all the BCS wins. TCU definitely got major props with the No. 2 finish in both polls, same for Boise State finishing in the top 10. What was a little disheartening was Nevada not making it into the top 10 despite the 13-1 record and win over Boise State. It still shows that you get grudging respect when you have been on the national scene for more than a year. As for a playoff, we can keep on wishing. BCS chief Bill Hancock says we are more likely to go back to the old bowl days because there is no groundswell for a playoff among the folks in charge. Kevin in Rockledge, Fla., writes: I am a huge UCF fan and I was wondering where UCF stands with the Big East. Do you think Villanova will take the spot over us? I would really appreciate some insight

Marvin Fong / The Plain DealerThe only certainty about the Terrelle Pryor era at Ohio State is that, at this time, it has fallen short of expectations. Now the college career of Ohio State’s enigmatic star-in-waiting could come to an end on Jan. 4 in… Source: Cleveland.com

Only one Big Ten team took the field during the weekend, and there’s only one change in the final regular-season power rankings. Enjoy. 1. Wisconsin (11-1, 7-1 Big Ten): Life is good in Madtown as Wisconsin celebrates its first trip to Pasadena in 11 years. The only bad news is the red-hot Badgers must wait until Jan. 1 to play their next game. TCU’s defense is the best unit Wisconsin has faced since Oct. 16 against Ohio State, although we know how that one turned out for the Badgers. 2. Ohio State (11-1, 7-1): After another perfect November, the Buckeyes try to end their troublesome slide against the SEC in bowl games as they head to New Orleans to take on Arkansas. The defense has its hands full with Ryan Mallett . Ohio State hopes quarterback Terrelle Pryor can be as good in the Allstate Sugar Bowl as he was in the Rose Bowl in January. 3. Michigan State (11-1, 7-1): Make no mistake: The Spartans got snubbed from the BCS. But the best way they can respond is to beat defending national champion Alabama in the Capital One Bowl. Mark Dantonio is 0-3 in bowls as Spartans coach, so his team can record another milestone in a season filled with them. 4. Penn State (7-5, 4-4): The Nittany Lions are the “hottest” Big Ten squad among the second-tier group, although that isn’t saying much. Still, a young Penn State squad has a chance to make some strides before taking on a very beatable Florida team in the Outback Bowl. If Matt McGloin , Evan Royster and Silas Redd get it going against Florida, Penn State should prevail. 5. Iowa (7-5, 4-4): It’s time for Iowa to flush a poor finish to the regular season and focus on what it does very well — win bowl games. The Hawkeyes head back to the state of Arizona, where they lost Sept. 18, to take on Missouri in the Insight Bowl. Quarterback Ricky Stanzi tries to get his mojo back against a Missouri defense that ranks sixth nationally in points allowed (15.2 ppg). 6. Michigan (7-5, 3-5): The bowl game looms large for coach Rich Rodriguez and the Wolverines, who can end an up-and-down season on a good note. Michigan needs its much maligned defense to improve in bowl practice before facing another spread offense in Mississippi State.
