First it was Auburn, and now it’s LSU under the microscope. Former Texas A&M assistant Van Malone told ESPN.com that Willie Lyles, who runs a scouting service, told Malone that Texas A&M would have to beat $80,000 if the Aggies wanted to sign Patrick Peterson out of high school. Malone is the recruiting coordinator and secondary coach at University of Tulsa. He said he told Lyles that A&M doesn’t pay for football players. Malone added he told Peterson in a subsequent phone conversation that Lyles was trying to sell his services. Peterson, through LSU, released a statement denying he had any relationship with Lyles and that he was never offered anything to go to LSU. “I have never had any type of relationship with Willie Lyles and he had no influence on my decision to attend LSU, or any other school for that matter,” Peterson said. “He had no involvement with my recruiting process and I resent the fact that my name has come up in these allegations. I chose LSU because it’s a great school with a great football program. I never received nor was I offered anything to go to LSU, and anyone saying otherwise is being dishonest.”

A large part of the recruiting process has to do with making sure. When a kid commits to play for your school as a high school junior (sometimes earlier), there aren’t any guarantees he will sign on that dotted line to play for your school when National Signing Day arrives in February.

ESPN Recruiting gurus Corey Long and Jamie Newberg checked in this week with updates on how Boise State, TCU and Utah are doing on the recruiting trail with two months to go before Signing Day. As expected, TCU has done very well in the state of Texas, while Boise State and Utah are mining their way through California. Here are snippets of what they had to say about all three schools. Boise State: “With limited talent available in Idaho, coach Chris Petersen and his staff must search far and wide for the players who will help the Broncos compete at the highest level. California and Texas are popular spots for the Broncos’ staff, and the 2011 class has 12 of its 17 commitments from those two talent-rich states.” TCU: “TCU coach Gary Patterson has done a masterful job building this program. The Horned Frogs are getting to the point where they are on the radars of the big-time recruits, something that is never easy for a non-automatic qualifier program, and joining the Big East will make things even better with recruiting.” Utah: “With a move to the Pac-10 coming in 2011, Utah continued to battle BYU for the state’s top recruits while increasing its profile in California. Of Utah’s 18 verbals, 14 are from California. The Utes always have run a quarterback-driven offense and have 6-3 230-pounder Derrick Brown (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) as their arm of the future.”
