Disaster is probably too strong a word, but this spring hasn’t gone well for Tommy Tuberville, specifically at quarterback. Texas Tech senior quarterback Taylor Potts will have surgery on his throwing hand and miss eight weeks, a school official told ESPN.com on Monday. Potts and fellow senior Steven Sheffield were set for the Big 12 conference’s top quarterback battle, one that began last season. After injuries to both quarterbacks, new coach Tommy Tuberville will get a longer look this spring at who could start in 2011 rather than 2010. The damage to Potts’ hand, after he hit a teammate’s helmet on the follow-through of a pass last week, was worse than originally believed. The surgery will fix ligament damage, keeping him out for the remainder of the spring. Surgery removes the option of throwing this spring, an option Tuberville hoped he’d have next week, presumably after Potts had his six stitches removed. Doctors recommended the surgery this afternoon, and the date has yet to be set. Sheffield was scheduled to undergo surgery after breaking his left foot in practice last Monday. Sheffield stepped on a teammate’s foot and will be out 8-to-10 weeks. Now sophomore Seth Doege and redshirt freshman Jacob Karam take over, splitting first-team snaps for the remainder of spring practice
