One of the few bright spots for Tennessee this season was a defense that ranked 28th nationally in total defense and did it with three true freshmen in the starting lineup. The guy running that defense was Justin Wilcox, considered one of the brightest young defensive minds in college football. He was wooed by Texas last season, but elected to stay at Tennessee. The Vols weren’t able to hold onto him this time around, as Wilcox and linebackers coach Peter Sirmon have agreed to join Steve Sarkisian’s staff at Washington.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A quick look at No. 5/6 North Carolina Tar Heels’ 99-49 victory over the Nicholls State Colonels on Monday: What it means: UNC’s starters, who will play their third game in five nights against Texas on Wednesday, should be well rested. Coach Roy Williams substituted liberally in the second half, often in five-for-five swarms, and none of the starting five played more than 25 minutes. How it happened: Although it shot the ball poorly early on, UNC took the lead early by dominating the backboards.

DALLAS — Oklahoma already had a 48-10 lead, but that was hardly enough. The Sooners kept starting quarterback Landry Jones in the game, along with the rest of the starting offense. They even tried to convert a 4th-and-3 at the Texas 27-yard line. Oklahoma reached that point by throwing seven passes on eight plays in the drive. It’s been a big day for Oklahoma, but the Sooners look like they want it to be even bigger.
