1. Are you ready to get excited about No. 13 Clemson? The Tigers knocked off Auburn and Florida State, both of them ranked, in consecutive weeks and made it to 4-0. Are you ready? No, I’m not either. Those are impressive wins but they are each easily explained. Auburn is young. Florida State had to play on the road one week after a bruising battle against Oklahoma. If Clemson can maintain its focus after two emotional wins and go on the road to beat No. 11 Virginia Tech, then I’ll be impressed. 2. No college head coach is more old school than Chris Ault of Nevada. The Hall of Famer has given fifth-year walk-on quarterback Tyler Lantrip every opportunity to be the Wolf Pack starter — until now. Redshirt freshman Cody Fajardo , who split time with Lantrip, rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown and threw for two more scores in the 35-34 loss at Texas Tech

One of the more interesting things about covering Big Ten football is seeing how the league and its members balance tradition and history with the need to grow brands and keep up with national trends. Whether it’s expansion, instant replay, the addition of division play and a championship game, a new TV network or simply more football in prime time, the Big Ten and its schools are in a historic period of change. Michigan is a particularly fascinating case study, particularly since Dave Brandon took over as athletic director in March 2010. Brandon has roots in the Michigan tradition as a former football player under Bo Schembechler. He also returned to his alma mater from the business world and saw a brand that, despite its historical significance, needed upgrades. Brandon made branding a priority from the start and has facilitated several changes. Michigan now has lights at the Big House. The Wolverines will play their first night game Sept. 10 against Notre Dame — in throwback jerseys , no less. They will open the 2012 season against Alabama at JerryWorld in Texas. New LED video boards are being installed at Michigan Stadium. These moves wouldn’t be notable at many programs, but they are at Michigan, which hadn’t exactly been a beacon for change. I recently caught up with Brandon to discuss the Michigan brand and his vision for the future. What was your impression of the Michigan brand when you arrived as AD? Dave Brandon: The Block M brand has always stood for excellence. It’s a brand that is connected with the history and tradition of college football. It’s the oldest football program, it’s the winningest football program. It’s got a lot of iconic characteristics in terms of the Big House and the winged helmet and legendary coaches and many championships. The expectations around the brand are always high. As I came in and did my review, I think our brand had received some short-term hits that were a result of football being such an important brand builder for us. We’d had two consecutive years of poor performance, not being competitive in our conference, not going to a bowl game. We had the NCAA violations and all of the negative ramifications of being involved in investigations and allegations. Certainly that was detrimental. And across the board, one of the measures is our performance in the Director’s Cup. We had fallen to 26th that previous year, which was a real low point. So it felt to me like even though we continue to have a strong brand, in the near term we had slid back a little bit.

Cowboys, Huskers face player suspensions

Oklahoma State and Nebraska will both be without suspended players on Saturday. Oklahoma State announced a one-game suspension for receiver Justin Blackmon , currently the nation’s leader in receiving yards and touchdowns. Blackmon attended Monday night’s Dallas Cowboys game, and was pulled over by police doing 92 mph in a 60 mph zone just north of Dallas in Carrollton, Texas at 3:45 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Police charged Blackmon, 20, with a misdemeanor DUI. In Texas, persons can be charged with a DUI for any amount of alcohol if they are under 21 and driving. An officer said Blackmon fell into that category. Blackmon declined to discuss where he got the tickets to Monday’s game, but school officials told reporters on Wednesday evening that the compliance office determined it was not a concern. No. 20 Oklahoma State plays at Kansas State on Saturday. Blackmon will not travel with the team. Elsewhere, the Big 12 announced on Wednesday afternoon that Nebraska sophomore reserve linebacker Eric Martin would be suspended for an illegal hit in the Huskers’ 51-41 win over Oklahoma State last week. Nebraska kick returner Niles Paul returned a kick 100 yards for a score with 6:27 to play in the first quarter of the Cornhuskers’ 51-41 win over Oklahoma State last week, but on the play, Martin made helmet-to-helmet contact on a block with Cowboys freshman defensive end Andrew Hudson. Hudson was attended to for several minutes before being carted off the field. “Mr. Martin committed a flagrant act of targeting an opponent with the crown of his helmet in violation of NCAA football rules,” commissioner Dan Beebe said in a statement. “This dangerous hit is one that we in the football community are trying to remove from the game.” No penalty was assessed on the play, but Big 12 officials reviewed the game tape and issued a suspension in accordance with NCAA Football Rule 9-6-3, which states, “if subsequent review of a game by a conference reveals plays involving flagrant personal fouls that game officials did not call, the conference may impose sanctions prior to the next scheduled game.” No. 14 Nebraska hosts No. 6 Missouri on Saturday.
