It’s sort of fitting for the game so far, considering his No. 5/6 Tar Heels — who lead 39-23 at halftime — are wiping the floor with Texas so far. A 13-1 run put the Tar Heels up over the younger, shorter Longhorns early, 19-7. Texas cut into the lead with a 7-2 run of its own, but then UNC put on a sprint that had the home crowd louder than it has been all season.

AUSTIN, Texas — Manny Diaz refuses to take a step back. It’s just not in his makeup. The Texas defensive coordinator is a full-steam, batten-the-hatches, get-out-of-the-way coach. Luckily for those around him — coaches and players — Diaz has a defense ready to do just that. Because Texas was forced into playing so many young players on defense that meant there were very few redshirts. That, in turn, means Diaz was more hands on with the younger players because they were not littered throughout the scout team.

By now, Texas coach Mack Brown had almost no choice. Texas will almost certainly go with a two-quarterback approach against UCLA on Saturday, demoting Garrett Gilbert to third string . Case McCoy and David Ash are listed as co-starters ahead of Gilbert, who went 7-7 in his 14 starts and has 13 touchdowns to 23 interceptions for his career. Gilbert completed 2 of 8 passes for 8 yards and two interceptions before being benched early in the second quarter of Saturday’s 17-16 win over BYU. He was booed repeatedly coming on and off the field in Saturday’s game. McCoy, the younger brother of former UT star Colt McCoy, shared time with the mobile true freshman Ash for the rest of the game. They combined to complete 9 of 11 passes for 92 yards. Freshman running back Malcolm Brown also was listed as co-starter on this week’s depth chart with senior Fozzy Whittaker .
