Yesterday I was in both Dallas and Fort Worth, and this morning I was in Austin. Now it was time to go up Interstate 35 North to Waco, home of Baylor University. Waco is pretty much known for two things. One is the home to the main campus of Baylor University, and the other is for the events that surrrounded cult leader David Koresh.
On February 28, 1993, there was a shoot out in which six cult members of the Branch Davidians and four agents of the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) died. After 51 days on April 19, 1993 a standoff between FBI agents and Branch Davidians ended in a fire that destroyed their compound located in Mt. Carmel, near Waco. Seventy-four people, including leader David Koresh, died in the blaze. |

Somewhere between Austin and Waco I passed this sign. I love highway signs....especially the ones that use the state within the sign.
No sure where this goes, but I know you can go east from here.... |
Hazboy posted a photo:

I figured this place would be the DisneyWorld of processed meats judging from the bold lettering of the sign. I passed it about 5 minutes ahead and almost missed it while driving on I-35 heading north toward Waco.
(By the way, I prefer the "faux" jerky....) |

Bevo is to the town of Austin what the Pope is to the Vatican......well, not exactly.....you know what I mean.
Everybody in Austin and the entire state of Texas know who he is. He is the symbol for the University of Texas.
See you next time, Bevo !!! |

The Texas Longhorns cheerleaders broke into the dance performed on the Saturday Night Live sketch "The Church Chat" since their team was far superior to Texas Tech on the field today. Here is a clip of Dana Carvey and his Church Lady character

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Joe had a great game, filling in for starting running back Malcolm Brown. Joe rushed for 191 yards and scored three touchdowns in the Longhorns 52-20 win in Austin over Texas Tech. |

Smokey the Cannon is an artillery piece used as part of the pageantry of college football games of The University of Texas Longhorns. Smokey is operated and cared for by the Texas Cowboys, a University student organization. Smokey is fired each time the Longhorns score, at every kick-off, and at the end of each quarter. The cannon is present for all home games.
The original cannon, Smokey I, was constructed at the University's mechanical engineering lab in 1953, in response to shotgun blasts often heard at the Red River Shootout — the annual Texas-Oklahoma football game.
Smokey I was modified in 1955 to shoot twin 10-gauge shotgun shells. This revision was renamed Smokey II.
The current version of the cannon, Smokey III, weighs 1,200 pounds and fires up to four blank 10-gauge shells at a time. The cannon was built in 1988 by Lupton Machinery of Austin out of the trunk of an oak tree |

Texas Tech just scored. so it was time for the flag guy to run around the end zone waving the Red Red Raiders banner. It looks like the Texas Longhorns people at the cannon were getting ready to fire at it. |

It was a rough day for Seth and the rest of his Red Raiders team. Tech got their bell rung by the Texas Longhorns 52-20 in Austin. I'm sure it was a long quiet trip back to Lubbock in the Texas Panhandle for the Red Raiders. |

The man in the police outfit looks like Sheriff Buford T Justice....from the "Smokey and The Bandit" movies.

The extra point after Bergeron's touchdown run gave Texas a 38-6 lead in their game with Texas Tech.
It was a tough day to be a Red Raider fan.... |

Who needs Malcolm Brown.....they got Bergeron ! With their starting running back Brown injured, Joe stepped up and had a big game for the Horns, scoring three touchdowns on the day for Texas.

He broke through the line of scrimmage against Texas Tech. He has just one guy holding onto him from the Red Raiders...will he score the touchdown ??

Hazboy posted a photo:

Since the Longhorns rarely pass the ball (with David Ash as quarterback) look for running back Joe Bergeron to take the ball.
The Texas Tech defense knows this....let's see if they can stop them

As a collegiate football player at the University of Texas at Austin, Earl won the Heisman Trophy in 1977 and led the nation in rushing with 1,744 yards. In 1977, he became the first recipient of the Davey O'Brien Memorial Trophy which was awarded to the most outstanding player in the now-defunct Southwest Conference.
